The Walk

I get outside the apartment and pick a direction. I've been exploring a little more everyday and I feel like I'm getting better at navigating.

I put my headphones in and start the music. I made a playlist just for my daily walks. I put my phone in my back pocket, tucking it under my hoodie. The music blasts through the headphones drowning out the world around me.

I make my way to the little supermarket. Might as well do some shopping.

I head into the store, grab a buggy, and start putting a few things in the cart.

I grab some steak and potatoes for dinner tonight and then I grab a few side things.

I walk up to the register and pay for everything.

I grab the three bags that the groceries have made and make my way back to the apartment.

As I'm getting closer one of the bags break. "Shit." I mumble under my breath. Why didn't that lady double bag these? A can of ravioli rolls away and I curse under my breath again. A hand reaches down and grabs the can. I stand up and look at who just saved tomorrows lunch. "Here you go." He says.

It takes me a few minutes to reach for it. His emerald eyes wouldn't release mine. I grab the can and put it in a bag that wasn't torn. "Thank you."

"No problem. You might want to watch your cans." He says and laughs.
I smile.

His laugh is light but you can tell he means it. "Let me help you. How far are you going?" He asks and takes one of the two bags that are still left. "Um. Just a little farther up there and around the corner." I say.

"Ahhh, the apartments?"

I nod. "I live there with my friend Gabriel." I explain.

"Friend? Not boyfriend?"

I laugh, "yeah just friend." He smiles.

We get to the apartment and he opens the door for me. I walk in and I can feel him right behind me. "Second floor." I say and lead him to the apartment.

I open the door and I hear the bimbo laughing.

"Sounds like he's having fun." The guy says. I nod my head. He follows me into the kitchen and places the bag on the counter.

I put the food away quickly and I grab a water bottle. I offer one to the guy standing in my kitchen but he shakes his head.

I feel like I'm going to regret this but I make my way to Gabriel's room. "I'm going back out but I picked up a few groceries." I say through his door. "OKAY!" He yells back and a series of giggles comes through the door. I roll my eyes and head back out of the apartment and I can feel the guy behind me.

"So. Stranger. What's your name." He asks me once we get back outside.

"Brooklyne. What about yours?"

"Jacob."

"Well, nice to meet you Jacob." I say. "You too."

We walk in silence for several more minutes.

We walk farther and farther.

He breaks the silence and asks me about where I'm from and why I chose to come here. I tell him that I didn't have the best family and that I just needed to get out. I wanted to be somewhere small, somewhere no one would really look. He doesn't press on my past life and for that I am thankful.

"What about you, where are you from?" I ask. He's from Australia.

He plays soccer, volleyball, tennis, and on occasion, football. He's 18. He works at the same hotel I do he just works a different shift. He is an only child and he still lives with both parents. He listens to music all the time, mainly country. He loves kids. His favorite color is green. And the list just goes on. We walk and talk for hours.

He ends up knowing more about me than Gabriel. I slightly started going into how my dad was abusive and my mom let it happen. I don't go into grave detail about it but I give him an overview of it.

He leads me into a McDonalds and we walk to a table. "What do you want?" He asks.
"Um. Chicken nuggets and a medium fry." I didn't realize how hungry I was until I was sitting down, and it hit me that I haven't eaten since this morning. "What to drink?" He asks. "Sweet tea." He nods and stands up. He walks over to the line and the cashier quickly takes the order. She hands him two large cups and he walks over to the machine and gets the tea for me and Sprite for him.

How does he do that? Sprite here is DEADLY. That shit burns. No Sprite is stronger than McDonald's Sprite.

He comes back over and sets my cup in front of me. "Thank you." I say. He smiles. "So. Tell me more about you." He says.

I don't know what else to tell him. I decide on small things. I tell him about my favorite things, where I'd like to travel, where I have been, and some of my fears. After a few long moments of silence, our order number is called and he goes up and gets our food.

He sets the tray down in front of us and we eat in silence.

Once we are finished he takes the tray and dumps it into the trash then places the tray with the others. "Thank you." I say when he walks up to me. "No problem."

He walks me back to the apartment, but this time doesn't really say anything.

We exchange numbers and he leaves me at the apartment door. I smile at myself and walk into the apartment.

"Hey." Gabriel says looking up from the couch. "Hey."

"How was your walk?" He asks. I close the door behind me and join him on the couch, crossing my legs underneath me. "Good, I made a new friend."

"Oh? Who is it?" He asks setting his phone down.

"His name is Jacob."

"Oh okay, that's good. You need to get out more." He says laughing.

"I know."

He laughs again and I roll my eyes.

"I'm going to bed I am tired." I say and stand up.
"Goodnight princess." He says standing up next to me. He kisses my head and walks into the kitchen.

I make my way to my room and close the door.

I wrap myself like a burrito in my blanket and drift asleep thinking of Jacob. His emerald eyes and blonde hair are so hypnotizing. What am I going to do with myself.

I fall asleep with a smile on my face.
