*~*~*

Everything was lined up perfectly. I brushed my hands subconsciously over my stomach, a mix of emotions fluttering through my chest. Naruto would be home any minute, and each second that passed felt like eternity. I hated surprises - never had the patience to keep them secret. But this one was special.

We're going to be parents.

Tears stung at my eyes, and I let them slip freely down my cheeks as a token of my excitement. Our family was finally growing, after years of trying unsuccessfully to conceive.

I swore to myself that this time I would make it safely through the first trimester before telling anyone, terrified by the thought of the pregnancy terminating itself. My body had rejected the opportunity before, stripping me of my chance to be a mother. I couldn't handle another loss, or having to see the heartbroken expression on Naruto's face that lingered well after my body had healed. I especially couldn't handle the pitiful expressions people would offer me in their condolences. Their sorrowful, seemingly subtle, glances towards my barren stomach, void of the life that had been growing within, felt like a dagger in my chest every time.

But this time was different. I was well beyond the risk period (by two weeks, even, just to be safe). My doctor assured me that both mine and the baby's health was stable. And although he couldn't ever make any guarantees, he agreed: it was time to tell Naruto.

My chest swelled at the thought of him. I pictured his excitement, his face lighting up at the news. We had both faced so many hardships and losses, especially after the war. Now, it was time to celebrate.

It had felt like hours by the time Naruto finally arrived home. I glanced at the clock on the oven, noting that, in reality, it had only been about fifteen minutes. I swallowed nervously, wetting my lips and wringing my hands as he approached the kitchen.

Naruto's eyes were weary, evidence he wore from the long day he'd had, but his face still broke into that signature smile. I beamed at him.

"Welcome home," I said, breezing towards him and encircling my arms around his shoulders. Naruto returned my embrace, burying his face into my hair with a sigh of relief, his day finally finished. "I have a surprise for you. It's in the oven." I pulled away and ushered him towards the stove, watching as he threw me a questioning glance before opening it.

Naruto pulled out a tray of small, rounded loaves of bread.

"Wow, (F/n)," he said, his voice forcing a polite excitement. His smile was tilted, laced with confusion. "Thanks! These look great."

"They're buns," I added meaningfully, a futile attempt for him to understand the reference. "Buns. In the oven."

"Yeah, and they look great," he repeated, setting the tray on the counter. He pulled one of the loaves from the tray, popping the whole thing into his mouth. "Thanks."

I resisted the urge to slap a hand to my face. Perhaps I should have gone with something more obvious. Apparently, I had wrongfully assumed that he would appreciate (or at least understand) the humor.

Good thing I always have a backup plan.

"I made this, too," I said sweetly, handing him a neatly wrapped box covered in teddy bears. Naruto's look of confusion deepened. He ripped into the box and pulled out a small, baby's onesie.

"World's Greatest Dad," he read aloud, eyebrows scrunched. "Who's this for? Is Kakashi pregnant?"

"For the love of - no, Naruto," you said sternly, ripping the onesie from his hands. "I am! I wanted to surprise you." Your voice wavered, once again flooded with that damn wave of emotions. Tears leaked heavily from your eyes and you sniffed indignantly, turning away from your husband.

"I'm awful at surprises," you whined to yourself. You buried your face into your hands. "I've ruined it. I'm so stupid."

Naruto was silent behind you as you wept, frozen in his place as he tried to make sense of the situation. He cleared his throat once, and then twice.

"You...you're pregnant?"

You continued to cry into your palms, but managed to mutter out a watery, "Mm-hmm" in response.

Within seconds you were lifted into the air.

"You're pregnant!" Naruto shouted, spinning you around so he could kiss you. He embraced you tightly before setting you on the ground. He ran to the window and opened it.

"We're pregnantYou hear that everyone?! We're going to be parents! Believe it!" Naruto turned back to face you, his blue eyes watering in pure delight. He dropped to his knees before you and placed a gentle hand to your stomach. He looked up at you expectantly.

"How far along?"

You wiped at your face, both relieved and comforted. You laughed lightly at his sudden excitement, now that he had finally realized what was going on.

"Fourteen weeks," you replied. "I wanted to make sure everything was safe before telling you. Doctor says we're both healthy."

Naruto pressed his forehead to your belly. His tears soaked into the fabric of your shirt. Your own tears dripped down your face and dropped atop his head. He lifted the edge of your shirt slightly and pressed a loving kiss against your skin.

"I love you so much," he whispered softly, directing the sentiment towards your stomach. Naruto stood, then, taking your face in his hands and kissing you deeply. "And I love you so much," he repeated, embracing you once more.

Everything had come together after all, even if your surprise hadn't gone exactly as planned. But Naruto's response was precisely what you had hoped for. And now, you were finally able to share this journey with your husband. To share your emotions, your fears, and your hopes with him along the way.

You breathed a sigh of relief. We did it.

And you were ready.
