"Gone..."

The word just didn't sound right. At least, not in the way that it was being used.

Gaara sat back in his seat, frozen by the news he had just heard. It felt as though the blood in his veins had been replaced by sheer ice. His limbs refused to move, seemingly paralyzed, as though somehow his brain and his body had become separate entities.

He wanted to move, needed to move – and fast.

But he couldn't. All he could do was stare blankly at the shinobi that had just rushed into his office. For a moment, the killer intent that had been resting dormant within Gaara for so many years threatened to resurface.

"Kidnapped..."

No. There was no way. How could that be?

The chime of the bell, hanging above the entrance to her father's bakery, alerted the (h/c)-haired girl of the arrival of new customers. She forced a confident smile onto her face as she went to greet them, but faltered upon seeing the sand siblings waiting behind the counter.

More specifically, she froze upon seeing Gaara.

Her face turned a brilliant shade of red as she walked to the register.

"H-Hello," she greeted shyly. Her eyes darted around nervously, and she avoided making eye contact with the trio. "How c-can I help you?"

Gaara frowned at the girl as Temari and Kankuro placed their orders.

Was she afraid of him?

After the chuunin exams, he had tried so hard to turn a new leaf – to make others believe in him, and prove that he could change.

Perhaps he needed to try harder?

After his siblings paid for their treats and exited the bakery, Gaara lingered behind. Once the door behind them closed, Gaara turned to the girl, who was still avoiding his eye.

"Are you afraid of me?"

He tried to ask her in the softest voice possible, so as not to frighten her any further. The girl jumped upon being addressed, and her eyes snapped towards Gaara. He noticed that they were a beautiful shade of (e/c), and for some peculiar reason, he found that his throat had begun to go dry.

"O-Of course not!" The girl blurted out, her face a deep red.

She took a slow, calming breath before speaking again, her (e/c) eyes dropping to her fidgeting hands. "I guess I'm j-just a little shy," she admitted. Her gaze once again found Gaara's, and she offered him a small smile. "I'm (F/n)."

Gaara, for some reason, found that he couldn't speak – not only did his tongue feel like lead in his mouth, but his brain didn't seem capable of creating coherent sentences. So instead, he simply jerked his head in a curt, nodding motion and exited the shop.

Temari and Kankuro were by his side, now, guiding him out of his chair.
