CHAPTER ONE

↪OUTER BANKS↩

THE HOT SUMMER sun beamed down on the group of Pogues. Lyssa's hand rested above her brow as she squinted slightly, trying to adjust to the beaming ray of lights. She watched as John B balanced one foot atop the edge of a roof from a new development. Faint laughter mixed with the hallowing wind - John B and Pope were joking around and the latter was joking about shooting the former down from where he stood.

JJ wrapped his arms around her shoulder as he took a seat beside her on the scaffolding. The condensation of his beer dripped onto her shoulder as she promptly closed her sketchbook. She slipped it under her thigh, tucking a strand of her unruly curled hair behind her ear.

"What could possibly be so important in that book?" questioned JJ, referring to the book. Lyssa seemed to go through sketchbooks like water, and he'd be the one to borrow new books for her from the stores.

She clicked her tongue, taking a sip from her beer. "Nothing."

"Come on, why so secretive? I'm your best friend, it's the main rule that you can't hide a secret from me." stated JJ.

Lyssa playfully rolled her eyes. "Not a chance J."

"Now, I wont be getting you anymore books." He stated, resting his head upon her own. A warm smile crossed the brunettes face as she leaned into his embrace, watching the sunrise with her bestfriends.

Lyssa shrugged her shoulders. "I can get them on my own." she remarked, sipping her own beer. JJ smiled at her, knowing it was true. They made it their thing to go out and borrow things from the stores.

"They're gonna have Japanese toilets with towel warmers." Kie complained as she walked out the house, swinging around the railing and looking out towards the ocean. She had decided to snoop around the house they were trespassing in.

"Of course. Why wouldn't they?" Lyssa asked, rhetorically. "Kook's always gotta live in paradise."

"I can't have cold towels." JJ drawled, glancing at Lyssa who playfully rolled her eyes at him.

"This used to be a turtle habitat, but who cares about the turtles, I guess?" Kie continued, turning around to face her friends. Her eyes landed on John B, "Can you please not kill yourself?"

Lyssa looked at her other bestfriend, scoffing at his immaturity. "Let him, I wanna see how this plays out."

"Don't spill that beer!" JJ shouted over to John B, having caught his attention John B held his beer in the air above the deck. "I'm not giving you another one."

Lyssa scoffed under her breath. "He's so gonna do it now." she muttered.

As on cue, a gust of wind past the group. Lyssa laughed silently as her hair blew around her and the beer slipped out of John B hands. The group of five watched as the beer fell onto the deck, spilling it's contents all over.

"Of course you did." JJ chirped sarcastically. "Like right when I told you not to."

"Smooth."

"No." John B groaned, leaning forward and making grabby hands at his spilled beer.

"A-plus." Lyssa remarked, slowly clapping her hands. "Now, butterfingers, I suggest you come down before you break your neck next."

"Hey!" an angry voice shouted, followed by a slamming car door.

"Hey, uh, security's here." Pope patted down the deck twice. "Let's wrap it up."

"Boys are early today." John B looked over the horizon to see two security guards coming their way.

"Humpty Dumpty, let's roll." JJ exclaimed, standing up. He held a hand out, helping Lyssa up. He let out a whoop of excitement as Lyssa and him, leant over the scaffolding. "Gary is that you? Gary, good to see you, man!" He called out, getting down the scaffolding followed by Lyssa and John B.

"Hi, Gary Bary!" Lyssa waved her hand in the air, leaning over the deck. "Have you been going to the gym?" she questioned, holding back a smirk.

"Yeah, ya'll are just asking for it." Kie shook her head, a smile tugging at her lips. She looked at the two before breaking into a run, the rest following after her.

"JJ! Lyssa!" Gary yelled angrily, knowing the two teenagers names by heart, considering they got into trouble quite a lot.

They rushed down the stairs, JJ's hand in Lyssa's as she pulled him along. She wore a big smile on her face, and her eyes were wide with adrenaline. They ran through the bottom level of the house, Lyssa released her hold from JJ's hand as she met with a security guard running straight at her. "Sorry, I'm not flashing today." she called out, dodging the security guard.

"Get 'em! They're comin' your way!"

"I got him!" Gary yelled joyfully as JJ ran straight into his arms.

However, JJ was quick and managed to slip out of his grasp. "Not much of a hugger!" he yelled.

"Gary Bary, you gotta ask him on a date. But you gotta wait in line!" Lyssa called over as JJ joined their hands again, pulling her out the house. She laughed as they ran, watching Pope struggle to get over the fence. "Pope, go!"

"Go! Go, go, go go!" JJ yelled, quickly approaching the fence. Lyssa pushed Pope over the fence, resulting in him face palming the floor. She quickly jumped over the fence with ease.

"Shit, sorry Pope." She held her hand out.

"Get up , Pope, fatso's coming." JJ commented.

"Come here, ya' little pricks!" Gary screamed over the fence.

"C'mon!" Kie yelled from the van.

John B honked the horn to the VW bus, "Bus is leaving!" he yelled at his three remaining friends. Lyssa, JJ and Pope continued to sprint towards the van, all breathing heavily. JJ dove in first followed by Lyssa then Pope.

"Check out Gary, gunnin' for a raise." Pope laughed, pointing at Gary who continued to run after the van.

Lyssa slide open the door, leaning out. "Oh, hey Gary! Wanna another show?" she fiddle with the ends of her shirt, referring to the last time she flashed him two days ago when her friends and her where doing the same thing as today.

"No." JJ said harshly, bringing the girl back into the van. He leant out the car door and held the beer out. "You're so close. You can do it! There you go!" JJ threw that beer can at Gary, who surprisingly caught it. "They don't pay you enough, bro!".

"You're wasting beer." Lyssa whined as she sat down.

"JJ stop, stop." Kie commanded, dragging him back into the van by the shirt. He fell back beside Lyssa.

"Boring." he muttered. The two fell into a heap of laughter. Kia glared at the two. JJ simply shrugged his shoulders, "Oh, come one. That sort of initiative is just begging to be punished."
