It was too much. Too hard. Too late to save them. Too late to save Sophie.
But she didn't need him. She had her other friends. And Fitz.
Beside that point, she could take care of herself. Though it certainly wasn't Keefe's preference to leave her alone, she wouldn't die when he was gone. She was beautiful, and capable, and brave, and strong.
Now he had to go, and she wasn't there to send him off. Wasn't there so that he could tell her how much she meant to him.
But she'd said... she'd said she'd be there. She'd said she would always be there. He didn't know how he knew, but she wasn't by him anymore. She'd left. Sophie had left.
No matter. He wouldn't – couldn't – hold it against her. Her life was busy. He couldn't expect her to set everything else aside for him. He wasn't that important. She was important. She was all that mattered.
He just wished he could say goodbye.
