"Leg-," Julian walked into Legend's room but stopped short when he saw the mess of blood, parchment, and broken items in it. In the middle of the room was Legend. His skin glowed a weird bronze color, and he didn't look entirely human.
Suddenly, it all sunk in. Tella acting weird. Everyone acting uncomfortable. Jacks appearing everywhere. Legend being gloomy. Scarlett losing it. The whole dungeon ordeal. And now this. It all clicked. Jacks. "You didn't," Julian said.
"Oh, but I did," Legend responded coldly. "I'm still doing Caraval, after all. Wouldn't want the Master of Caraval dying, would you?"
The full effects of Legend's choice wedged themselves into Julian's head. This meant no more Mr. Nice-and-happy-and-loving Legend. It meant the Legend he'd been dealing with for so long: shady, selfish, greedy, cruel, wicked even. The Legend people would hide from when he got mad. Who did whatever it took to play his games. To win.
It would be like Julian was an only child. He might as well have been. "Legend, why did you do this?" he asked.
"Brother, I am no longer capable of love. Not for you, not for Tella. Why even bother anymore? I'd rather accept defeat and live than keep trying and eventually die," Legend said.
"So that's what I am to you? Just dirt under your feet? Just a pawn in your stupid game? It's like I'm not even your brother anymore!" Julian shouted before turning on his heel and walking away.
Oh, how he wished he could be an only child.
