CHAPTER SIX
Five minutes before five, I was already standing outside Cooper’s Frozen D’Lights. I was standing there waiting for Iggy…and hoping that none of my friends saw me. From a distance, I saw the familiar old maroon Mitsubishi Lancer roll into the parking lot. The driver’s door swung open, and after stepping out, he seemed to lift the door a bit before slamming it shut. The moment he noticed me, he smiled and gave me a wave before jogging over.
“Hey. I hope I’m not late.” Iggy said.
I glanced at my wristwatch. “You’re right on time, actually.”
“Cool.” He smiled. “Let’s go inside.”
We both went inside the ice cream shop and headed straight to the counter. There was a huge man standing behind the counter with his back against us. He didn’t look like your average ice cream salesman—he looked more like a serious bodybuilder. The light blue polo shirt stretched over his bulky muscles.
“Excuse me,” Iggy said, stifling what seemed to be a grin, “I’ll have two scoops—pistachio and vanilla almond. What about you, Nat?”
“Um, Caramel Macadamia and Chocolate Crumble.” I answered after a quick scan of the display.
The big man turned around with a tiny notepad in his huge hands.
“Okay, so a double scoop of Pistacio-Vanilla Almond and another double scoop of Caramel Mac and Choco Crumble. Will that be all?”
The man glanced up from the notepad, his eyes shifted disinterestedly from my face to Iggy’s, then his eyes suddenly lit with surprise and pleasure.
“Iggy!” His voice boomed and the people in the shop turned to stare.
“How ya doin’, Uncle Coop?” Iggy’s grin broke out.
The big man circled around the counter and gave Iggy a bone-crushing hug.
“Uhh..can’t breathe…” Iggy choked out.
“Sorry,” the man smirked as he put Iggy back on the ground. “Whaddup with you, mini man? How’s Nana doin’?”
“She’s still makes the most amazing beef stew.”
“Now you makin’ my mouth water. Nana always did have magic in that teensy kitchen of her’s.” He sighed at a memory. “So, what brings you here?”
“I just wanted to pay my favorite uncle a visit.” Iggy replied with a smile.
“Aw, shucks.” The man gave Iggy’s shoulder as slight punch. I caught him wince and rub his shoulder.
“Uh, this is my friend, Natalie.” Iggy quickly introduced me.
“Friend?” The man wiggled his eyebrows suggestively at Iggy and gave him a suspicious grin.
“No, not that kind of friend!” Iggy looked a bit exasperated. I just kept smiling since I didn’t know what else to do.
“If you say so.” The man shrugged his massive shoulders and wiggled his eyebrows again. Then he wiped his big hand on the tiny white apron tied around his waste, stuck it out in my direction and gave me a friendly smile. “Name’s Cooper Reynolds.”
