"We have to jump... into a hoop"
George's deadpan delivery had me struggling to keep a straight face, instead looking at the instructor expectantly.
"Not quite, Mr...?"
"Weasley, Forge Weasley"
"Right. Not quite Mr Weasley" the instructor said, walking toward the group of us, "to learn disapparition and safely, you're going to stand on that spot there" he pointed to a line of marks on the ground a few feet away from the hoops, "and turn on the spot, with the intention of reappearing in the hoop"
Lee huffed from beside me, muttering under his breath, "what, like it's just that simple"
As the class walked to their marks, the teacher began speaking once again.
"When disapparating it's important to remember the three Ds: Destination, Determination and Deliberation" he spoke, pointing at Bethany, "Where is your destination?"
"Uh, the hoop?"
"Good" the instructor then turned to Marie, a Ravenclaw, "what's your determination?"
"To arrive in the hoop without splinching"
"Very good" he then turned and pointed at Charlie Dolohov, "and your deliberation?"
"Planning out exactly where in the hoop I'm going to land"
"Exactly" clapping his hands together, the instructor, gestured towards the hoops, "most of you might not get it first time, this is why we have twelve lessons. However, I would like you all to try getting in to the hoop so we can see how to correct your attempts before the exam"
I stared at my hoop, frown on my face as I turned to whisper to Fred next to me, "So, what we're supposed to just... spin?"
"Seems like it - not really teaching us is he" he replied, equally hushed.
"Check me out" Lee announced, twisting in place with a smirk. When nothing happened, he tried again, scrunching his nose in concentration. A loud pop was heard, Lee's body seemingly stretching slightly before returning to normal.
"Woah! What was that?"
"Excellent Mr...?"
"Jordan. Lee Jordan"
"Mr Jordan almost disapparated! Well done young man"
"Thank you sir"
"Now, when you feel like your body is stretching, it is important that you stay calm and push through the sensation. Disapparition feels like you're being stretched like an elastic band, and then squeezed through a tight tube, before re-expanding on apparition" he explained, pacing slightly, "therefore it's essential that you stay focused and keep all of yourself inside the tube, this way we avoiding any splinching incidents"
As the instructor walked away, George elbowed Lee in the side, a proud smile on his face, "Look at you go, Lee! Tell us how you did it"
I laughed as the two dissolved into a small argument, George hooking an arm around Lee's neck and pulling the shorter man closer to his body, ruffling his hair as he demanded answers.
"While they're doing that" Fred snickered, catching my eye, "shall we try?"
"Bet I can go further than you" I winked, raising my eyebrow in challenge.
"Bloody likely!"
We both began to furiously twist on the spot, minds intent on reappearing in the hoop.
After about five minutes, a small pop to my left had me pausing my actions, Fred now stood a few steps away from where he started.
"Excellent job Mr Weasley!"
Smirking, Fred pushed past me to get back to his starting position, leaving me with my mouth agape, "That's how you do it, love""That wasn't - this isnt- oh you're going down Weasley"
"Sounds good to me" he grinned, wiggling his eyebrows, ducking as I aimed a light smack to the back of his head, chuckling at himself, "I'm sorry, sorry"
"Prick" I hissed, willing down the grin that pulled at the edges of my lips.
"Your prick"
"You redeem yourself sometimes I guess" I sighed playfully, tightening my grip on my wand once again, "but I'm not going to show you any mercy""Stop looking so smug!"
I hummed, walking ahead of the three of them with a large smile on my face, "I don't know what you mean"
"We get it" Lee groaned, "You got the furthest"
"Hear that and weep Fred Weasley" I laughed, turning around with a flourish, "I got the furthest"
"But still not in the hoop"
"It's only the first lesson, dear" I smiled, pretending to brush some dirt off of his shoulder, "I've got to make this little competition fun, I can't just win on the first day"
"Don't be getting too cocky" he replied, stepping closer, "it'll just make it more embarrassing for yourself when you lose"
I giggled, eyes dropping to his lips as Fred got even closer.
"Mum! Dad! Stop flirting in front of the children!" Lee complained, backed up by George who had started his fake gagging routine.
"You kids will be the death of me" Fred sighed, taking my hand in his as he stepped away, the two of us walking side by side, "one of these days you'll let me and your mother enjoy a nice moment"
George scoffed, "Hardly likely"
"We're with you for life, this is what you're getting"
"We'll follow you everywhere you go for forever"
"Is it too late to drop them off in an institution?" Fred huffed, resting his forehead on the top of mind.
Raising my voice to be heard over their sudden protests, I nodded slightly, "I'm afraid so, same with the nursing home"
"Bugger"
