YN:
I looked down at the beautiful white and royal blue gown I was wearing. Tears pricked the back of my eyes and I couldn't stop them. Yes, every girl cries on her wedding day. Unfortunately these were not happy tears. I was marrying a man I didn't love. There was no doubt about it that Prince Soobin was handsome, but I did not love him. We were forced to marry because our parents believed the marriage would unite the kingdoms. His people didn't believe he was capable of ruling them without a queen by his side. After the wedding, the coronation would take place in fourteen days time.
"You look beautiful, your highness," my lady in waiting and closest friend, Emira said.
"Thank you," I replied. I looked at myself in the mirror and sighed. The gown was beautiful. The white satin material created a sleeveless top before flowing into a full skirt. There were royal blue threads running throughout, creating a delicate flower pattern. I had gems weaved through my long curls in the same royal blue.
Emira patted my shoulder. "Are you okay?" she asked, concern on her face.
I nodded. "I'll be alright. I just need some air. Excuse me a moment," I said, giving her a tight smile.
I stepped out of the preparation room, closing the door behind me and made my way down the corridor to a small balcony. I went to step onto the balcony, but was stopped by voices coming from just outside the open door.
"I can't believe this is happening," a female voice said. "What about us?"
"It's in name only," a man's voice replied.
I stood there in shock for a moment. I recognized that voice.
"You're really going to marry her?" the female asked.
Soobin sighed. "I have to. She may have my name, but she'll never have my love. That will always be yours."
I peeked around the open door and saw my future husband with his arms around a beautiful blond woman. As I watched in horror and disappointment, Soobin pulled her closer and pressed his lips to hers. The woman wrapped her arms around his neck, tangling into her hair.
I gasped in shock as Soobin moaned her name. The noises alerted them to my presence and they both turned towards me. Soobin didn't even try to hide the fact that he was kissing another woman minutes away from our wedding.
The blond woman snarled at me, clear hatred in her eyes. "Well look what we have here," she said, mockingly. "The little princess."
I couldn't keep the hurt from shining through my eyes. Yes, this was an arranged marriage, but I had hoped that maybe one day Soobin and I could like or even love each other and turn this into a real marriage. All of my hopes shattered at his feet.
Soobin stepped back from the woman, releasing her. "You will speak of this to no one, do you understand me?" he said, his voice quiet, but filled with rage.
I nodded quickly then turned before the tears could fall from my eyes. I hurried back to the preparation room, trying to erase the image of what I had just seen from my mind.
My mother and father were in the room when I returned. My mother looked beautiful in her long emerald green gown, the color of royalty in our kingdom. She had her hair swept into an updo that emphasized her graceful neck and made her look half of her age. My father had on his ceremonial attire, a high-necked white jacket graced with his military medals and coronation sash over black pants. His dark hair was smoothed back, showing the hint of silver at his temples.
My mother stepped forward and kissed my cheek. "You look beautiful my darling," she said.
I nodded carefully trying to keep a calm façade. I was still in shock from what I had just witnessed between Soobin and the beautiful blond. I didn't want to give any indication that something was amiss.
My father stepped forward and held out an arm. "Are you ready dear girl?" he asked, a hint of sadness in his eyes.
I nodded again. "Yes father. I am," I replied, pasting a fake smile on my face. My parents' marriage had been arranged, but they had grown to love each other deeply. I was optimistic about my future, but after seeing Soobin with the blond girl, any chance of this marriage turning real was nothing more than a pipe dream.
Soobin:
I sat in the chair in the study, a glass of whiskey in my hand. I couldn't believe what had just happened. I wasn't expecting my bride to find my secret just yet. My bride. I scoffed at the words. That little mousy princess was not the woman I had expected to marry. She was shy and far too quiet. I guess that part was good. She would keep quiet about what she saw, especially if she knew what was good for her. At least my parents wouldn't find out about Mina just yet.
Mina. I smiled at the thought of the well-developed blond, my dress pants becoming too tight around my groin. We had been seeing each other for two years in secret. Although she was beautiful, she was not a suitable wife for a king. She was the daughter of one of my father's trusted advisors, but didn't have a solid bloodline. Not to mention, she had had way too many lovers. My parents would never have accepted her as my bride and I wasn't willing to step down and concede the throne to my younger brother, Taehyung.
I clenched my fist at the thought of my younger brother. Although I was the oldest, he was the golden child of the family. The little bastard was always trying to one up me. I refused to attend college; Taehyung gets his masters in political science. I have a reputation for being a playboy; Taehyung has decided to save himself for marriage. I quit the lacrosse team in high school; Taehyung played soccer in college, earning them a championship as their lead forward. I smiled to myself. This was one thing Taehyung couldn't have.
I sighed and drained the glass, then set it back on the table before getting to my feet. I looked at myself in the mirror and smiled. My white double-breasted jacket suited my broad shoulders and the royal blue sash that represented my kingdom just accentuated them. There was a loud knock on the door and I turned at the sound.
The door opened and my head guard, Jungkook, stepped through. He bowed then straightened himself back up. "Your highness, they are ready for you," he said politely.
I waved a hand to dismiss him. "Yes, yes, Jungkook. I will be there momentarily," I replied, the irritation obvious in my voice.
Jungkook bowed again. "Very well, your highness," he said, as he turned to leave the room.
I sighed again and followed Jungkook from the room. I went to the front of the church and looked out over the people who had been privileged enough to attend. YN had wanted to extend the invitations to more of the people, but I refused. I was not going to mingle with the commoners. Sometimes that woman acted as if she didn't have a brain.
I saw Mina in the third pew, sitting next to her father. Her red wine colored dress was shorter than most and perhaps a bit tasteless for the occasion, but I ignored that. The short, tight dress accentuated her tiny waist and full breasts. I gave her a small smile then turned to face the back of the church as music filled the room.
The double doors opened and a young woman in an emerald green gown entered the room. I knew this was YN's sister, Janeul. I had met her the evening before. The young woman had been studying in Spain the last few years and had only just returned to the country.
The doors opened again and my bride stepped through on the arm of her father. I had to admit that she looked stunning. The late afternoon sun coming through the windows lit up her pale skin and caught the diamonds at her throat, filling the room with rainbow light.
YN walked slowly up the aisle, a tight smile on her face. Her father deposited her at my side then leaned down to kiss her cheek. The preacher stepped forward and the ceremony began.
