There was a particular day in year 8 I could never forget. Being kicked out of my maths class for telling my teacher that her arse was oddly shaped, I was waltzing through the corridors when I spotted a boy, his mop of blonde hair dishevelled, standing in the middle of an empty corridor, his eyes tightly closed, fingers crossed.
I recognized him instantly, Todd Stetson. He was a big deal as he was new, already had a place with the more popular guys in our year and even other years, very cute, and all the girls talked about.
My first instinct had been to slap him back to earth to stop whatever witchcraft he was doing, but I decided to go with the more logical part of me which said to ask questions.
"What kind of bloody witchcraft is this?"
Even at twelve my language hadn't been the most appropriate.
His eyes had popped open at my question, a small smile climbing onto his face as he regarded me. "Hello. I'm Todd."
"I know who you are. What were you doing?"
The smile didn't leave his lips. "Waiting for destiny." At my raised brow, he offered to explain. "You see, I don't know who to take to the dance next weekend. Some girls already asked me and I turned them down. I really want to go, I just can't pick a date because I'm still new and don't really know anyone."
I frowned in thought. "Why don't you just go alone?"
He looked at me like I was crazy. "I can't."
"Why not?"
"Because I'm normal. Anyway, I told my creator that I would close my eyes and the third girl I saw when I opened them would be my destined date to the dance."
I blinked. "Am I the third girl you've seen?"
"Second. Now shut up so I can wait in peace for the third girl to show up." He closed his eyes again.
I wanted to tell him what he was doing wouldn't work when another girl had appeared from the same class I was kicked out of.
"Sarah." Wally said, fuming. "Why are you always like this? This is the third time you're kicked out of class this week!"
"Well I ..."
I didn't bother to finish my sentence because her eyes had widened, Todd immediately gaining her attention and when I looked back at him, she'd gained his. I watched, amused, as he took slow steps towards her, a small smile on his face.
He held her hand. "Hello. Beautiful girl. Do you believe in destiny?"
Long story short, they did go to the dance together and had been something ever since even though they didn't start dating till year 11.
If whatever witchcraft that was had and was still working for Todd, it had to work for me too.
So I closed my eyes, holding on to the belief that the first adult I saw when I opened my eyes was destined to help me. After all, I too believed in destiny.
I didn't have to wait five minutes.
"Ally?"
My eyes flew open to see a woman staring at me with a frown. I shook my head immediately. "No no I'm not Al ..."
"What are you doing here? Why aren't you at home? Where is your brother?"
I blinked. "Ma'am I do not have a brother, my home is miles away from here and I'm definitely not ..."
I was cut off again. "Your mum said it! Your mum said you would do this and I didn't believe her! I will not take this! You're coming with me!""
To my amazement and horror, she started dragging me. It was a battle field as she had an iron grip and I was trying with all my might to free myself.
