I make it on my train without any problems or second guesses today. I walk up the crowded streets to the Columbia building.
I hop off the elevator and greet the receptionist, whose name i've now learned is Julia, with a slight wave and make my way down to my little corner office. I round the corner to enter the room and stop at the door, seeing that there is a boy standing in the center of the room with his back turned to me.
"Oh uh- hi," and he turns around, looking like a deer in headlights for a moment.
"Oh, hi! Sorry you startled me, didn't mean to look like I was about to shit myself. I mean I'm definitely nervous enough to do that, but what a terrible start to the day that would be" he says with a charismatic smirk.
"Yeah the worst start to a Monday for sure" I giggle. He makes his way towards me and extends his arm. "I'm Gabe, I'm the other intern for this year," I take his hand and shake it gently. "You must be Charlie, Maggie was talking about you when I got here." he says.
"All good things I hope," I say to him.
"Only the best of things, she couldn't stop bragging on you and your coffee fetching abilities. Apparently you know exactly how she takes her coffee and get it right every single time. I don't know how I am ever going to live up to those expectations," he says and we both give a little laugh, and with that laugh any awkwardness that has lingered is gone now.
"Oh yeah, just call me Maggie's personal barista."
"So Charlie, how have things been? I hate I missed my first week, had some family issues I had to deal with back home, but tell me all about it. Is it everything you dreamed it would be?" he asks me.
"Even better. They let us be really hands on, like I've sat in with Maggie on meetings with clients which has been unreal," he cuts me off with "No way, who? Like actual clients signed to this label? You met them? I feel like a 13 year old girl fangirling right now."
I smile and shake my head as I laugh at his questions. "Yeah like real clients. I got Adele some coffee the other day and I literally thought I was going to pass out I was so nervous,"
"As you should be, I mean for god's sake it's Adele," Gabe replies and we both smile at each other for a moment.
My phone rings so I reach down to grab it from my purse and see that Maggie's contact is lit up on my screen. I answer it and before I can even get out a 'hello' Maggie is giving me instructions.
"Your presence has been requested by an artist in the meeting room, so I need you to walk down there immediately. Says he's not starting until you're in the room," she says.
"Me? Why me? Who is it? I-" I say, tripping all over my words.
"I don't know but I got a call from Rob saying they needed you there now, so go." she says and hangs up the phone abruptly. I'm speechless as well as scared shitless.
"You look like you've seen a ghost, whats up? " Gabe says.
"I-I've been requested in an artist meeting... alone I think?" I reply and Gabe's jaw drops to the floor.
"You're kidding! Damn Charlie, the people here really do love you. Who is it?" he questions.
"Honestly, I don't have a clue. I mean I'm just an intern, what could I possibly have to offer them?" I say, my voice shaking due to the nerves that are continuing to build as we speak. I grab my bag and exit the room without a word.
I make my way down to the meeting room, and as I enter a familiar set of green eyes meet mine immediately. My heart flutters as he gives me a soft smile and a little wave, motioning for me to sit beside him. I make my way over and he greets me with a "Hello there Charlie Matthews"
"Good morning Harry Styles," I reply. "So, did you call me here? Like individually?"
He replies with a confident "I did, today's meeting is on my music. I wanted to run some of the songs by people other than my team and Columbia. And figured you were here, and I like your company so why not?"
Before I can respond, Harry's manager Jeff starts the meeting.
"Alright guys, we're going to go ahead and start listening to a few songs we're thinking about for the album. Take notes and listen closely, well discuss at the end of each song,"
Not even 10 seconds later, the demos starts to echo over the loudspeakers in the room.
"This one's called Carolina," Jeff says, and as soon as he does I snap my neck towards Harry.
There is no way... I know he didn't...
He has a smug smirk on his face, trying to hide the urge to burst into laughter . I give him a confused look, trying not to draw any attention to myself.
He just chuckles and shakes his head, "Crazy coincidence, isn't it Charlie?" he says with a little wink.
