We made it to the mountain and looked for the back opening. Since they needed an escape route, they'd have the back ready if needed. It took us a long time to find it, and when we did, Luke and another older boy lifted the door slowly and Jason listened underneath. He got up, they gently let go of the door and it fell back into place (A/N think like a garage door :3)
"Not there yet. We go, or wait?" He said.
"We'll split. Half go in, half keep the door open while we hold the officials back. Whoever' staying outside- be sure to get as many as you can into our van," I said.
"Miss?" A woman said, "there are 4 more cars out over there. The keys are hanging there, and the doors are unlocked, except for one."
"Use them," I told her. She nodded, grabbing two more people to pull the cars over to where the van was. We split into two groups. A couple guys slid the door open and we hurried into the room and hid. Elliot was across from me, Jason was down by the corner of the room, and Luke and Alan were under the stairs, ready for the officials to come down. Morgan already got the word around to most of the kids. We heard the alarm go off and soon, we could hear people's footsteps coming down. Elliot and I stood up, ready to direct the kids towards the door. When everyone came down, we ran with the kids in front of the group and knocked for the guys to open the door. They did, and everyone slid under.
Everyone was gone. Everyone except Morgan. I even saw Nick and Logan as they passed under. And Dawn wouldn't even look at me.
Alan approached. "Got everyone?"
"No, we're missing one, Morgan," I told him. "Where's Ember?"
"Dunno. She didn't come down. Neither did Skilling," he shrugged. Panic rushed through me.
"Go with the others. Jason and I will go look for her," I blurted, without thinking. His eyes searched me, maybe looking for that shy girl he once knew. He nodded and led everyone out. They closed the door behind them.
"Okay," I said to Jason. "Let's go."
"Me too," Elliot said, jumping from his hiding spot.
"Elliot! Why are you here?" I said.
"I haven't seen you in months, and this is how you talk to me?" He grinned. Of course he was teasing me. "I'm doing this with you. You rescued me."
I smiled. "Okay, fine. Then let's go." We ran up the flights of stairs and into the empty cafeteria.
"Her office?" Jason suggested. We nodded and made our way towards that. "Split up!" He whispered. I went into the office, Elliot checked the rest of the hallways, and Jason was in Dr. Skilling's office. I crept around, hoping to find Morgan. But, I had a feeling wherever she was, Ember was. It was so quiet here, almost peaceful.
I kept searching and suddenly, I heard a crash. My head perked up immediately and I ran for the door. I yanked it open and, as I did, a figure appeared in the doorway. Ember. She stepped in, and locked the door behind her. On instinct, I screamed, hoping Elliot or Jason would hear me. But she put her hand to my mouth and shushed me.
"You've caused enough trouble, Evelyn. Maybe it's best you stay with Morgan," she said, her voice just above a whisper. That's all I remember before my whole world turned black.
Sorry about the short chapter, but that cliffhanger though! Can I just say that after I posted chapter 14, we just hit 400 reads. And now, we're over 500. To some, it probably doesn't seem like much, but for me, that's amazing. Anyways, thanks for reading! ;) Ilysm!
