A/N Just wanted to say before this began... Thanks for 200 reads! Now, enjoy! :)

I woke up to the alarm. I shut it off and began the morning routine. When I walked down with Dawn for breakfast, Dr. Skilling was there waiting for all the kids to arrive. I grabbed a plate of food and sat down across from Noelle and Morgan. She smiled at me, and I smiled back. Last night, before curfew., we told the select few about our plan. They all agreed.

Once everyone was seated, Dr. Skilling rang a bell and the room quieted down.

"Attention everyone," she began, although she already had everyone's attention, "As you all know, we begin classes tomorrow. We have decided to begin a few special activities this afternoon. After you are done eating, you will be excused to go back to your dorms until further notice. We will practice drills, in case anything should happen while you are here. I will get to that aspect in a little bit. Also, today, we will allow you to talk to your families. We had the mayors of your county give the families who had none a tablet to use for communication and business purposes." I had a huge smile on my face. My family deserved that tablet.

"We will set up the conversation for you. Gail will be monitoring it at all times.

"Now, about the drill. If, for any reason, we need to evacuate, whether it is severe weather or dangerous activity that might be targeted at the City, we will pull you out of your dorms, or wherever you are. We will start with the top floor and work our way down. You will all be directed to the basement. You will not go down the elevator, you will use the emergency stairs. Once in the basement, you and your dorm mate will find the bunkbed with your name on it and wait until everyone is in the basement and it is locked. If the issue does not go away in 24 hours, we will contact the airplane and evacuate the entire building onto that plane and to our secret backup location. Am I clear?" She said, her voice firm. There were nods and murmurs of "yes."

"Good, now, hurry up and eat, we have a lot to do today." The talk around the cafeteria began again and I hurried to finish eating. The thought of seeing my family excited me until it was all I could even think of. I slid my plate into the rack along with my glass and went back up to my room.

Soon, Dawn was with me and we waited together. I was called first and I took my tablet down and they set up the chat for me. I sat in a chair, my tablet propped up on a desk, and waited until they picked up the face call. When someone finally picked up, it was Luke.

"Eve! How is it down there?" He said.

"It's so cool here, but I miss you guys so much!"

"We watched the broadcast by the way. At the ball. Alice couldn't stop talking about your dress. You looked amazing."

I blushed. "Thanks so much!"

"Here, Alice wants to say hi. Love you!" Alice had her face near the screen. "Evelyn I miss you!" She said, watching me. "Your dress was sooooooooo pretty. I want one just like it." She pulled her face away from the screen.

"Is Alan with you?" She asked.

"Uhh, no he's not. Why?"

"He's not here, and no body's told me where he was. So, I thought he was with you, because you guys are twins."

"Hmm. Weird. Can I talk to Mom?" I asked her, making my voice sound sweet and unafraid, but I was freaking out on the inside. Gone? How could he be gone? Did they take him? Alice and I said goodbyes and I was now talking to my mom.

"Hi hon, you looked so grown-up the other day." She said, wrinkles all over her face. She hasn't been sleeping, she's exhausted.

"Hey Mom? Where's Alan? Alice was saying how he's not there. What happened?"

"Oh, I don't know Ev-"

"Mom. I need to know. You can't keep secrets from me. Please." I begged. Tears formed in her eyes.

"They came for more families. They wanted to take Kaelyn's family, but he wouldn't let them. He stood in front of their family and told the men to take him instead of them. So they did." I covered my mouth with my hands. No no no no no. This cannot be happening. Kaelyn was my best friend growing up. Alan stood up for her, and he may be dead.

"I'm so sorry, Evelyn."

"It's alright mom. I'm fine. Promise me you'll take care of them, okay? And, get some more sleep, because they need you, and you have to stop worrying. Okay?"

She nodded weakly. "Okay."

I smiled at her. "Good. Now, I've got to go, but I can still face chat with you guys every now and then. I love you all." I said. We exchanged longer goodbyes, then the call was ended. I walked back to my room in silence. I felt terrible. I sat and began reading Everlasting, hoping it would distract me, but it didn't. (A/N if you were curious, I honestly don't know if it actually is an actual book, I just chose a name for it... Should I actually make a book called Everlasting? Lemme know!)

Dawn had left to talk to her family, and that's when it happened. The lights in the room turned red, and an alarm sounded. I jumped from my bed, grabbed my book and ran out of the door, where people were already gathered. We headed into the emergency staircase, where Nick found me.

"You okay?" He yelled through the alarm and kids yelling as we descended.

"No, not really, I-" I was interrupted by the voice of President Ember.

"Attention everyone. This is not a drill. We have sources that have become aware of an attack on the City by the rebels, outlaws that must be killed. We are leading you to the airplane immediately to our secret location. Please, do not panic. This will be over shortly, and you all will be safe." And with that, she stopped talking. Nick gripped my hand and squeezed it. He was nervous too.

We ran down and as we neared the basement, there was a loud crash. A few screamed. I held my hands over my ears as tears streamed down my face. People started walked around me, but Nick stayed with me, holding my hand and patting my back. He helped me to my feet and stared into my eyes. Without thinking, we both leaned in and I shared my first kiss with someone who was already matched, someone I cannot be matched to. Yet, I loved it, every second of it. When we released, he smiled at me and we continued down to the basement.

When we finally got to the basement, we filed into a huge plane and fled the City, just in time to see them drop a huge bomb on the building I lived in for less than a week. It went up in a big explosion then fell to the ground.
