The week flew by. The day of my birthday, May 8th arrived sooner than I thought. During the night, there was a knock at my door. I went to answer it, having been the only one awake.

"Hello, Evelyn. My name is Henry. I'm here to show you to your match. Please, come with me." He said, holding out his hand.

"This isn't traditional," I said. Henry gave a small chuckle. "Since you both are here at the training camp, we've jumped to an arrangement between you two." He said.

"What's his name?" I asked, skeptically. Henry chuckled again.

"We'll introduce you two when we get there."

"Get where?" I asked, my voice rising a little bit. Then again with the same chuckle.

"The library." He said, matter-of-factly. "Ready?"

"No, this just seems," I paused, trying to find the right words, "weird." He simply smiled and grabbed my wrist. I yelled, but he covered my mouth with his hand as he led me down the steps and, in fact, into the library. He pulled a book on the shelf and it opened a dim room. He threw me in and the passage closed. I looked around the room and saw a shadow in the corner. I screamed, and he moved out of the shadows so I could look at him. I fell to my knees. My match is...

"Hi Evelyn." He said.

"J-Jason?" I stuttered. "Y-you're my match?"

"I guess so. Please tell me there's away out of here."

"Not that I can see. Try looking for one?" I suggested. He nodded and turned toward the wall, searching for a way out. I ran my hands along the wall.

"I think I have something." He said. I turned to look at him just as he pushed a brick in the wall and a door opened. We stepped inside the dark, damp tunnel.

"Where does this go?" I asked him.

"I don't know," Jason said, "but I'd rather go down here than back in that room."

"But what if they come back and we're not there?" I asked, worried.

"Then we'll say we were scared. That we didn't know what was happening, or if we would ever get out. Hear me?" He asked, his voice changing from shaky and scared to stern and serious. I nodded slightly, not sure if I should agree with him or not. I looked back over my shoulder at the room we were just in.

"I found how to close the door," he said, nodding to a torch-stand on the wall. I looked back one more time and, as I did, the door busted open. Jason grabbed my arm and pulled me into the passageway, where he pulled on the unlit torch, which acted as a lever and closed the door. We both toppled onto the floor. Jason got up and helped me to my feet. We both ran down deeper into the tunnel.

"I was wrong," I said. He looked at me, confused. "I thought being chosen was a good thing. It's not. It's a living hell. I don't want this anymore." After I said that, I heard a crash. I ducked down, but Jason urged me up again.

"They're coming. We need to move." I got up and we both sprinted for the end of the tunnel. We finally saw a dim light at the end, which made our tired bodies run even faster. He sprinted ahead of me to take a look at what was there. When I joined him, he sighed and said, "Dead end. We're stuck."

There was a huge cliff, and we were somehow at the very bottom. If we were to go outside, there would be nothing to go to. But wait!

"There's a light over there!" I exclaimed. "Run!" And we both sprinted for it. It ended up to be an iron gate that had just begun to close. Jason shouted at me to slide under it, so we wouldn't get stuck. He went first, then I slid after he did. He helped me up and the gate closed. We both stood, panting.

"Go to that forest over there," he said. "We can hide in the trees." We both ran into the woods (A/N heh heh, Into the Woods? As in, the movie? Woohoo!). I could hear the men yelling at one another to run faster, or to just shoot us. We ran deeper into the woods and found a good, sturdy tree to climb. He let me go first, and when I got high enough to let him begin to climb, we climbed up together and hid in the trees.

That's when we heard President Ember.
