Roman and Patton are the mermaids. Also there are two storylines right now. Patton and Roman for one and Patton and Logan for another.
flashback
Roman and Patton are swimming in the water. A particularity string wave knocks Patton's glasses off. Roman swims a bit closer to the shore to get them. He gets a bit too close and somebody points out his tail. His vision goes black.
-End of flashback and one month later-
Roman wakes up and rushes to wake Patton. He sighs another long day ahead.
Logan heads to Virgil's house. From then they're going to an aquarium. They got into an argument whether the aquarium had actual mermaids or not and just decided to go.
Patton wakes after a moment, glancing quickly around before looking at Roman
Patton, slightly panicked: What happened, Roman?
Before Roman could try to explain what happened a worker came in. He threw some fish in the tank. Both dead and alive.
Worker: Okay, there's going to be other people here. Behave.
Roman nodded. He then translated for Patton. Roman took a semester of English already but Patton didn't get to yet.
Patton frowned, a bit scared: People? Why...
He stopped, gasping. Almost all mermaids heard as kids of humans capturing mers and displaying them. It was... well, a better fate than dying, but still not a welcome one. Patton had thought they were just stories, but his eyes glossed as he realized they had been in wrong place at the wrong time.
Patton: Oh... Roman, what do we do?
Virgil was half asleep on his couch, having stayed up the night before. He got enough sleep, but being bored with what was on TV made it easy to start drifting. His dark brown hair was messy, the purple tips pushed out of his face with a bobby pin since his hair had gotten slightly longer
Roman: I'm-I'm not sure.Another worker comes in.Worker one: Okay so you guys need to stay awake and entertain.It's opening soon. Understand?Roman nodded even though the human was talking to him like he was some sort of dolphin.He then translated it to Patton but made it a bit nicer. The aquarium opens.
