Chapter 10

August's POV

This is your fault. You should've stayed. You knew something was wrong and you still left her alone. You're the reason she's gone.

"She's not gone." I whispered to myself.

Yes she is. She's dead.

"No." I cried as I gripped my sheets. I shook my head as the tears continued to fall.

It's your fault.

"I didn't know." I cried louder. "I didn't know."

I went home instead of going to the hospital, I needed to smoke or take my meds, maybe both.

My plans changed as soon as I opened my bedroom door. Everything just came crashing down all at once.

She's the only thing that's good in your life. You just got Kay and now you're loosing them.

You always mess stuff up. You don't ever do sh*t right.

"I'm sorry." I sobbed. "I'm so sorry Maree."
I felt like I heard some movement downstairs, but I was too occupied to move.

"August?" Slightly opening my eyes, I looked up to see Tiana.

"I'm sorry." I whispered, still crying.
She immediately rushed to me and sat beside me.

I didn't feel like I couldn't cry in front of Tiana. She was the first person I ever opened up to. I feel at home with her.

"It should've been me. She didn't deserve that." I sobbed.

"August, what's wrong?" She asked softly as she rubbed my back.

"Maree, she.....I didn't know. She told me to go to the store and when I came back......she....she was on the floor. It was pills under the bed. I didn't know Ti. I should've known." I told her between sobs.

"Is she okay?" She asked. I shook my head.

"No. It's my fault. It's all my fault. That's my bestfriend. My life bro. She's all I got." I told her, slightly leaning on her.

"August we need to go to the hospital if she's there."
I immediately shook my head.

"She doesn't want to see me. I did this to her."
Tiana shook me slightly.

"Baby no you didn't. She needs you. August when she reached out to me, I could tell she loves you a lot. She wouldn't have done that for just anybody. You need to be there for her, because you know she'd be there for you if the situation was flipped." Tiana told me softly. I sighed heavily before nodding.

"I need to smoke. If I go up there, I need to be calm. I can't go like this, I won't be able to think-"

"August it's okay. I understand, take your meds too okay?" Tiana cut me off. I nodded before grabbing what I needed and heading to the balcony.

"Room 523 honey." Tiana thanked the lady before we headed up to the fifth floor.

"August she's in a coma."
I shook my head in disbelief.

"The doctor said to talk to her. It'll help her wake up." I nodded and once the elevator stopped, I walked off.

I had planned on staying there, not saying anything. I just wanted to be in her presence. I needed it.

"Nah, I'm coming now. Aye! Don't shoot none of my bullets until I get there." I saw Lucas say into his phone.

That's why he don't tell her what his job is. This man in a gang.

"I gotta go, I'll be back." I gave him a small nod before heading in the room, Tiana close behind me.

There she was. She was in all white, she had all kinds of wires attached to her. It was weird; but she still looked like the same. She was still beautiful.

"I'll be on the balcony." I nodded and walked to Maree.

The closer I got, the more my anger rose. I tried to hold it in, I really did but I couldn't anymore.

"Why would you leave me?" I asked through gritted teeth. She didn't answer.

"Maree, why would you say that you love me and then try to kill yourself? Why would you go like this?" I yelled; but she still said nothing.

"Why won't you answer me?!" Holding her small hand in mine, I just shook my head. "Please talk to me."

"August." Tiana called. I shook my head.

"No, she can hear me. She needs to answer me!"

"August calm down, she can hear you. She just can't respond." Tiana tried to hold my hand but I moved.

"Bullsh*t." I mumbled.

You can't handle this. You lost her. Look at her. She's not coming back from this.

"Come on, you need to sit down." Tiana held me arm and led me to the chair that was beside Maree's bed. She stayed with me for a good hour before she finally said something.

"Will you be okay here alone? I need to go get Kayden."

I can handle it. I'm fine.

"August come on. I don't feel comfortable leaving you here."
I shook my head no and held Maree's hand again.

"I'm fine." My voice came out low but harsh, I didn't mean for it to but.....that's how I feel.

"I- Okay. I'll see you later." Hearing her leave, I sat back in my chair.

"I'm sorry for yelling. I just.....I'm angry. Why didn't you stay?" I asked her. I could look up, seeing her like this.......it broke me.

"I wish that I was good enough. If I was, maybe you would've held on. Maybe you would've stayed with me. You would've talked to me. You would've......" shaking my head, I let my hand fall from hers.

"I tried..... I tried to be there for you. I made sure you knew that I always had your back. I made sure you knew that I would do anything for you. But I.......I couldn't save you. You didn't care. You didn't want me to stay." My fingers tapped against the handles on the chair and my leg shook. Something I do to calm my nerves.

"I.......I understand that I'm not enough. I understand that you don't need me, I just prayed.......I literally prayed that you wouldn't leave me like everyone else; but I guess......I guess God didn't hear me this time. So I........I'll leave you alone. I'll let you go......since you've already let me go." I stood up and walked closer to Maree, leaning down and softly kissing her forehead.

"I love you baybeh." Sighing shakily, I left the room.
