It was a fairly modest cabin.
Around the size of my own room back home but with a lot more beds. There were three bunk beds in total plus a single bed, enough for six campers and their counsellor. Everything was made out of wood, the floor, the walls, the beds (except for the mattress obviously) even a little stand next to the single bed in the shape of a tree stump.
As I was looking around to see which bed would be best, I felt a light tap on my shoulder. "Hey, do you want to share a bunk bed?" Evangeline asked me since I was the only one around her age. "Sure, no problem as long as I get the bottom bed, " I replied.
"Oh great! That's perfect. I actually wanted the top bed so it works." We then proceeded to unpack our luggage and place the sheets over the mattress.
"I'll let you girls get settled while I go discuss something with the camp director. I'll be back soon," Bunny informed before exiting out the door, closing it behind her.
While the other girls were organizing and preparing their stuff, I sat crossed-legged on the bed, pulling my bag towards me so I could fetch my book to read a few pages later.
"Hey does anyone want to play truth or truth?" A girl that I recalled was named Hana pierced the awkward atmosphere that was beginning to settle in the cabin. "You know, to get to know each other a bit?"
"I'm down." Lucy shrugged.
"Same here." Evangeline said making her way to the center of the cabin.
"Doesn't seem like a bad idea so why not," I said sitting down between Hana and Evangeline.
"Who wants to start?" Lucy asked looking around at us.
"I'll start," Evangeline suggested. "Hana, what are three of your hobbies?"
Hana thought for a few seconds before she answered. "Scrolling through my socials, hanging with some friends and painting my nails," she enumerated showing off her summer-themed nails at the last one. "My turn now," she piped rearranging her position. "Lucy, what is your type?" She asked giving a light smirk at the strawberry blond-haired girl.
"Well, I like girls and guys I guess," she answered unsure of herself. Hana let out a soft 'oooo' before all heads turned once again towards Lucy, waiting to know who she was going to choose as her target. She scanned our faces one by one starting with Evangeline who was to her right until she finished with Hana. She looked down for a second before locking eyes with me. "Lyra, tell us the first thing that you thought of when you first saw us."
"This is going to be good." Hana leaned forward in interest.
"Well, give me some time to think," I said looking up at the wooden ceiling. "The first thing that went through my mind when I first saw Hana was that she was probably a popular girl at school." Hana leaned back on her palms, giving a look that indicated that she was expecting my answer.
"For Lucy, it was pretty random, I just wondered if she smelled nice 'cause she looked like she would," I shrugged earning a confused look from Lucy.
"Finally, for Evangeline I-" I was cut short by Bunny who had opened the door, catching our attention.
"Come on girls, let's eat." She gestured for us to follow. I quickly got up and grabbed my jacket that I had earlier thrown on the bed and followed behind the other girls.
The place was already packed with campers when we arrived. They seemed to be separated into their respective cabins accompanied by the instructors, sitting in front of what I earlier assumed was the lunch area. Most of them looked bored. Some were engaged in some small talk with their peers while others gazed up at the sky or were focused on pulling out some grass.
Bunny led us to a place next to where Cactus' group was settled and indicated for us to sit down. I didn't talk with my cabin mates. My focus was on Bunny who had gone over to Cactus who had told her something but was too far for her to hear. Something about her behaviour was nervous, constantly adjusting her glasses while conversing with the young man and putting on a shy smile. I don't like to assume things but I'd say that the redhead took a liking to his charming grin.
I soon got distracted by Janice bursting out the door of the small building asking for everyone's attention. The tight jacket that she wore earlier was now wrapped around her waist fully revealing her grey T-shirt striped with neon pink streaks. "Hello campers," she boomed, making sure all that were present could hear her.
"I'm sure you are all hungry by now, as a welcome gift today our chefs will serve pizza! I'll call out the cabins one by one, you'll follow your instructors and they'll lead you inside the cafeteria. Once you gather your food, you will exit by the side door to go eat outside on your designed tables that you can see here." She gestured to the area I saw earlier filled with pre-installed wooden tables accompanied by long benches for us to sit. "Without further ado let's start! Cabin Brazil."
We slowly got up and followed suit after Bunny into the building. I can't say I was exactly excited to eat pizza. Most people look at me with a shocked expression or as if I suddenly grew a pair of horns when I tell them that I don't like pizza. Let me just explain before anyone gets offended.
Since the day I was old enough to chew through the pizza crust, my dad would serve pizza every Friday, it had become a family tradition. After eating pizza every week of my life until I turned eleven, I got tired of eating it and no longer find it appetizing but I'll admit that I find it quite funny sometimes when I reveal the truth to people who think they know me.
The inside of the place was like the main cabin, entirely made out of wood. There were a dozen round tables orned with burgundy tablecloths alongside sets of four carved wooden chairs for each table. The counters where the food was stationed was in the back of the room. In the right back corner, there was a door leading to what I assumed was the kitchen. I was organized like a school cafeteria, serving ladies behind a counter waiting for your choice of food, a metal cart with two choices of salads you could choose from and the dressing you wanted along with it. I took a food tray stacked upon the many others on the counter stuck to the left wall and went behind Lucy waiting for my turn to order.
I asked for a single slice of cheese pizza and took a boll of caesar salad before exiting through the door. I hadn't realized how much the AC inside the building made a difference until I got hit by a wall of heat once I stepped outside.
I made my way to the table assigned to the Brazil cabin where Hana was waving at me who was already seated next to Lucy. I sat across from Lucy and Evangeline sat next to me shortly after. It didn't take long for each table to be filled with campers and a lively hubbub to start forming.
Janice took five minutes once more once everyone was settled to roughly explain the activities for the week before leaving the campers to their prior occupations. I quietly looked around at each table, analyzing the campers while sometimes pitching the conversation Hana, Lucy and Evangeline were engaged in. The table next to ours was occupied by cabin Canada, they seemed to already get along quite well due to all the teasing and messing around on their part.
They were rather loud but didn't compare to cabin Argentina, they were already acting like they've been friends since their childhood and kept on squealing. I wasn't exactly complaining for the sole reason that I couldn't. Most of my friends are fangirls and that's what we spend most of our time doing. Being loud.
One of them looked like she was describing an incredible story with how the girls around her were reacting. Even though they were loud, something about the whole thing looked slightly suspicious when the brunette who was talking gestured to the other gals to get closer so she could whisper and make sure nobody else was listening but I didn't think much of it.
Once everyone was done eating, we cleaned the tables and started making our way back to our cabins to get into appropriate clothing for a campfire.

It's been so loooong, but I'm glad I finished this chapter. It felt good :))And what could those girls have possibly been talking about?
