21. The years in which a young woman's life is filled with happiness, new drunken memories, laughter and pure warmth. The years a young woman begins discovering who she is, what she wants and what she needs.

For Lily, this wasn't the case. This hadn't been the case long before her 21st birthday. She knew she would spend it alone, it was quite evidently her destiny to be alone.

Freak, they would call her. Monster was another favourite, occasionally the Devil himself. Lily knew they were just words, just small insignificant words that shouldn't have an impact on her life, she shouldn't allow them to. But this wasn't the case either.

"Happy birthday our beautiful girl" Eloise, Lily's mother purred as she came up behind her daughter who was stood in front of a small box in the living room of their small home in Pittsford, New York. It was early hours in the morning, around 5am and it was still slightly dark out. "Open it" she gestured, pulling the box towards a smiling Lily.

Lily was never one to make a fuss of her birthday. She liked to compare life to the moon and the stars. Her birthday was truly insignificant compared to the galaxies that floated above, around, everywhere. Her mother on the other hand always loved spoiling her only child and Lily knew, that even though eighteen isn't exactly a special birthday, her mother would make it beyond memorable. Eloise was young when she had Lily, a child herself. Only in her 30s now she still loved the same things Lily loved. They had an unbreakable bond.

As Lily reached for the lid of the box, she paused for a second, turning to her impatient mother. "You really didn't have to-"

"Just open it Lily!" Her mother exclaimed impatiently, making the young brunette let out a small chuckle. She pulled the rest of the lid off the box and her eyes widened as they fell upon the most beautiful, sparkling locket she had ever seen. "White gold Lily, and real diamonds!" Her mother said again, clapping her hands together and waiting for a reaction off her daughter.

Lily was speechless. She picked up the beautiful locket and let the chain dangle from her hands for a moment as she admired the stunning piece of jewellery. "Open it" her mother said again, nodding towards the little latch on the side of the locket and Lily obeyed, carefully opening the small locket which revealed a tiny black and white picture of her and her mother. She smiled, a real smile. Her heart was full of warmth and joy and in that moment, she knew she couldn't be happier, couldn't be luckier.

"Mother! This must have cost a fortune- wait, what's that?" Lily cut herself off as she looked at the second picture in the locket. It was also black and white, but not quite a person. It was more like little white splodges with a black background. "What is.."

Lily's sentence was cut short when her mother pulled her long baggy jumper up over her belly to reveal a tiny bump and Lily's heart skipped a beat. "Mother you're.."

"You're going to have a baby sister" Eloise whispered to her daughter who was frozen in her place. She knew Lily had always felt lonely as a child and had longed for a sibling. She just knew her daughter would be just as excited about the news as she was.
