Lily had just finished her shift working in a bar downtown in New York. After she fled from her past three years ago, she had spent the next three birthdays in this same boring bar, with the same boring people.

Although she felt like her time was being wasted, she knew it was for the best. In fact, she was quite the bartender. She slept upstairs above the bar and worked to live. She got to keep her tips, but her wages were spent only on her room, which didn't quite work in her favour at first, however she did get used to it. She got used to being around the same boring people, whom now she would call friends.

Lily buried her abilities a long time ago. In all honesty, she still doesn't understand them. She doesn't understand what happened that day, why it happened. She occasionally will heat up an old cup of coffee after a long night of work but, apart from that, her powers are as dead as her parents.

The memory of that night comes back to haunt her every night and she replays the event every single birthday like it was yesterday.

"Come on Lil, it's your 21st! We should be celebrating big time tonight" Mara, Lily's co worker urged as she hopped onto the stool next to Lily's at the bar.

"You know I don't like my birthdays, Mara. Please just leave it, yeah?" Lily huffed, becoming increasingly annoyed with Maras persistence. She did this every year for the past three years. Of course Mara didn't know about Lily's life before working at the bar but it still didn't stop her from sulking.

"Suit yourself, i'm outta here" Mara exclaimed in her strong New York accent, finally giving up on persuading her friend to join her. "Call me if you change your mind, bore".

Lily rolled her eyes at her friends childish behaviour before turning back to the bar with a sigh. "Sure you don't want your first drink here before I close up?" her manager, Paul asked as he held up a bottle of tequila. The bar was now void off all people apart from Paul and Lily and much to Lily's delight, he was leaving soon too.

"Go ahead" She finally gave in, taking the shot he had poured her. She made a face as the liquid burned down her throat, but this didn't stop her from holding her glass out again for him to refill, which he obeyed with a chuckle as he filled one for himself too.

"To our Lil's 21st" He toasted sarcastically, knowing she hated when people make a fuss of her birthday. She rolled her eyes for the millionth time that night as she gulped down the second shot.

"Thanks" she replied with just as much sarcasm. Paul was nice, nice enough to be around anyway. He wasn't particularly kind to anyone, but he would stand up for his workers if customers gave them shit and that's what Lily liked about him. That was all she liked about him, really.

"Right i'm off kid, don't forget to lock up before you go up yeah?" Paul said as he packed his things into his bag and pulled out his car keys.

"Mhm" Lily acknowledged, leaning her head in her hands as she stared off into space. She jumped when she felt a gentle hand on her shoulder.
