Bucky Barnes really got on my nerves. I soon figured out it was the way he would put himself down, the self loathing and sabotage he put himself through, it irked me. We had all been through a lot in our years. I myself had come from a dark place before finding my way here, with the Avengers. Somehow he felt he was more undeserving of, well, everything.

I stood, looking straight up and into his bright blue eyes, this close they looked like a swirling galaxy. That particular day I had heard him tell Steve he didn't think he was worth it.

"How many times do you have to be told you are a good person?" I was practically jabbing his chest as I came to an abrupt halt in front of the Super Soldier. "You have done so much, you've had my back so many times out in the field. Why do you keep doing this to yourself?"

Someone had placed their hand on my shoulder, Barnes' arm had started to whir, as my voice rose a few octaves. I wasn't trying to be harsh. "Why?" I whispered fighting back tears that had started to form behind my lashes. Bucky couldn't help it, I knew I was upsetting him but outing him in front of Steve and Sam.

Steve's presence and touch was a reminder not to provoke Bucky, but I knew he wouldn't lash out or harm me. I wasn't scared of him, even now when he towered over me, muscles tight with the tension and anxiety building inside him. His jaw clicked and twitched as he looked down at me in defeat. I was certain he was holding his breath. One last whisper of "Please," and I walked away.

I looked over my shoulder before rounding the corner to the hallway leading to our sleeping quarters. Bucky's profile slumped as he let out a huge sigh and Steve placed a hand to his friend's shoulder.

I wasn't wrong in my feelings about Bucky Barnes. During the battle with Thanos, he saved my life. I had been surrounded by Outriders, one had managed to knock my weapon from my hands, they approached me like prey with razor sharp teeth ready to rip the flesh from my bones. He came from behind and took them out almost instantly. I would always remember his words, "I've got you." He had said as he picked me up from the ground, handing me my gun. All I could return was a simple nod of appreciation and thanks. It was as if my previous outburst had been forgiven. He had stayed away for days after and then when we lost him in the snap, so much guilt overcame me, wishing our last exchange had been on better terms. To see him standing in front of me on the battlefield, whole and complete took me by surprise, but I was grateful of his return.

At Tony's funeral Bucky and I stood close to one another and Wanda held my hand. I remember he placed his palm at the small of my back as Tony's wreath drifted on the lake. It comforted me and I think it comforted him, even if my cheeks did blush slightly.

We had stayed at Stark residence for the funeral and for a few days after, before we were all due to go our separate ways. Steve was planning to go back in time to return the Infinity Stones, I wasn't sure where I would be going or what I would be doing, but I needed a fresh start. We all did.

I was sitting on a wooden sun lounger by the pool at Stark Residence, Wanda had already left, a number of Tony's acquaintances still resided but today was to be my last day.

It was a surprisingly bright and clear day. I donned a navy bikini under a cotton summer dress. I had my sunglasses perched on my nose and book in hand, I peered over the darkened lenses; Bucky was sitting to my left, assessing the small crowd of people, he looked uncomfortable and annoyed. One particular sleazy looking guy, one of Tony's rich old friends, was trying to catch my eye. I rolled mine and looked back down to the book in my hands. Pepper had allowed us to stay for a few days, but there was no need for this amount of people or this guy to be here and it annoyed me.

Bucky continued to watch the crowd like a guard dog. It was becoming unbearably hot, even in the shade, so I wrapped a towel around myself before shimmying my cotton sundress off. Didn't fancy the guy sitting opposite me getting a show. I carefully made my way to the edge of the pool, before sitting at the water's edge and dipping in my toes. The water was soothing and cool against my heated skin. I let out a sigh of relief.
