Disclaimer: there are a few differences that don't match the books/movies, for example Cedric is in the same school year as the rest of them and there are people from different houses in all the classes for ✨diversity✨
The next day you were up early for class, it was potions with snape and you wanted to make sure you were there before class started to show him your dedication. Potions wasn't necessarily your favourite class, but you were good at it and you wanted to be even better. When you got there you went inside and walked over to your seat. It was early and there was only one other person in the room sitting in his seat head buried in his book.
"Cedric" you smiled, dumping your bag in your seat and hurrying over to him; he looked up at you with a half smile "I haven't seen you since... well, you know when"
He nodded and looked back down to his book, not involving himself in your conversation and making you feel like you were talking at a brick wall.
"Look, I'm really sorry about the other day" you started, pulling out the chair next to him and sitting down, flashing him a big and friendly smile "You've got a killer hook on you for a Hufflepuff, I'm impressed"
Cedric laughed and smiled down into his lap, his face was so kind and you could feel warmth radiating from him. He had a strong spirit in him and you liked that, something about his will drew you towards him.
"He hasn't recovered too quickly I hope" Cedric looked up at you with a cheeky smile and you laughed, shoving his arm and grinning in shock.
"He's a total baby, complained about it for days!"
The two of you laughed together, knowing that your badmouthing was in good spirit and not actually spiteful, but you were sure that if Draco were to hear he would be displeased.
"I hope he didn't give you too much trouble about it all" Cedric said, taking his hands off his book and turning to you properly.
You frowned and shook your head "he's not as bad as you think, you know"
Draco could be pretty nasty and unbearable sometimes but if you were on his good side he was good as gold.
"He called you a mudblood, Y/N" Cedric reminded you, raising his eyebrows at your lack of care for that.
It was such a horrible word and you had done your best to forget that he had said that. It was pretty unforgivable. You thought for a moment.
"I think that sometimes, cedric, people echo the thoughts of their parents, and I can't even imagine some of the ghastly thoughts that lucius malfoy has" you bit your lip, never liking to think about these things "I'm giving Draco the benefit of the doubt because I believe he deserves it...I can't even begin to imagine the heartache he lives with"
Cedric was quiet but he was nodding understandingly and the two of you sat in a comfortable silence for a bit. Everything you had said was true, the issues of Dracos home obviously leaked into his life and you could see the nastiness echoed in his actions, but he wasn't bad to the core. Draco just needed to learn to understand love. You wanted to give him the chance that no one had.
"He's a lucky guy" Cedric smiled sadly, flicking the pages of his book as a distraction from the conversation.
You laughed "how so?"
"It's a luxury to find someone who loves you so much they'll forgive so much darkness"
He looked up at you with glassy eyes and you frowned a little, not sure what to say. Draco and you weren't actually official, you didn't think anyone knew.
"I don't know what you're talking about" you shrugged, playing dumb with a little smile.
He laughed and nodded "okay" but it wasn't convincing.
