Chapter 10
Me and James went our separate ways. He went to these carriages pulled by these horse-like things. I guessed they were thestrals. I wondered why I could see them, I didn't think I have seen death... Anyways, me and Jas followed Hagrid, where we eventually found ourselves at a lake. A squid's tentacle snaked along the water.
"Oh, no. I am not getting in there with that squid in there!" I squealed, louder than I thought, too because everyone turned to look at me. "Sorry! But I'm not a fan of Giant Squids!"
Luckily it was dark, so no one saw my scar. "Well, he won't hurt you. Stop being a snob, and get in the stupid boat." A girl with silvery blonde hair said.
"Uh, I am not a snob! I just don't like sea creatures..." I trailed off. The tentacle was getting closer. Suddenly, it shot out of the water, and wrapped itself around me. I screamed. I have a pretty deep voice, for a girl, when I sing I'm an alto, but I let loose the highest and most blood curling shriek known in the history of mankind.
The squid didn't let go. Instead, it dragged me across the water, without letting the water actually touch me, and deposited me on the bank of the river. I was still screaming, but I scuttled back from the bank, until I reached these huge doors.
I was still screaming, and the doors opened. I stopped screaming right away. I was curled in a ball and shivering. The gray-haired woman behind me frowned down at me.
"Who are you?" She asked me. I couldn't stop shivering. That was a horrible experience.
"E-E-Eva N-N-Ni-Night" I stuttered.
She gasped. Then composed herself and asked, "And what are you doing? Shouldn't you be on the boats, and defiantly not screaming on Hogwarts steps!?"
"T-The squid t-took m-me an-and put m-me here. I'm scared of sea creatures." By the end of my explanation, I had stopped shivering, and managed to stand up.
"What? He's never done this before. Why would he do this?" She asked, then worked a spell to put me in a more dry state, and when I got out my iPhone, which I had in my pocket, and looked at my reflection, I was as good as new make-up and all. And my phone sill worked.
"I don't know. I wanted to know the same thing!" I said to her.
"Eva! Eva!" When I didn't turn around, because that's not the name my brain's hardwired to respond to, there was a "June! JUNE!" Then, I did turn around. The boats containing the first years were in the distance, hurtling towards the bank of the lake. In a matter of seconds, the boats were on the shore, and Jas was running at me.
When she reached me, we almost tumbled to the ground. "Are you okay?" She screamed in my ear, hugging me fiercely.
"I'm fine! I'm fine!" My voice was becoming horse, from all the screaming.
Then the gray-haired lady ushered us in, and led us to a room off the dining hall. "Hullo first years. I am Professor McGonagall, Head of Gryffindor House. In a minute, you will all be sorted and the feast will begin." The gray-haired lady - Professor McGonagall - said, and left.
I turned to Jas, and grinned. I took out my phone, and looked at my refection. It was perfect. Then I looked at Jas and said, "Picture?" I unlocked my phone, and went to the camera app. We smashed our heads together and smiled. I snapped the picture
When I put my phone back in my back pocket of my jeans, I brushed off my clothes and looked for Rose and Albus. When I saw them, I rushed over, pulling Jas with me. "Hey! Ready to get sorted?" I asked them, practically hopping up and down with excitement.
They, however, were not. Rose was pale, and Albus almost looked dead. When I looked over at Jas, she was pale too. "Okay. Maybe not." But before I could say more, Mrs. - I mean Professor - McGonagall came in and took us into the dining hall.
We were walking down the aisle, and people were pointing and whispering. All about me. "Do you see that scar?" "Is it just makeup?" "Eva Night!" "Do you see her?" I tried to hide my scar with my hair, to little avail.
McGonagall came, and put a stool on the stage. With a torn, beaten, and blackened old hat in her hand, she started reading names off a list. About twenty people in, she called "Night, Eva" and people gaped and pointed and whispered. I walked up the steps, and sat upon the stool.
When McGonagall put the hat on my head, and it slipped over my eyes, a small voice in my ear started talking. "This is another hard one. Another Harry Potter. Very smart. Just like that Hermione Granger... But you don't feel like your anything special. But you defiantly are. You would do well in Slytherin... but you don't have the evil mind. Brave, very brave... So brave, so it must be GRIFFINDOR!" The hat screamed. The hat was lifted off my head, and I smiled and ran over to the far table of cheering kids, my cheer louder than any others, almost deafening.
All the kids within a two table radius from me started getting up and shaking my hand. After about fifty to a hundred hands, I finally sat down at the end of the table.
"Weasley, Rose" McGonagall called. The hat stayed on her head for a few seconds, and then shouted "GRYFFINDOR!" And I stood up and clapped along with the rest of the Gryffindors. Then "Potter, Albus" was called, and the hat just skimmed the top of his head before screaming "GRYFFINDOR!" And I stood up and clapped again.
Then the sorting resumed. After a few people being called, McGonagall finally called "Khan, Jasleen" Jas went up and sat on the stool. I smiled encouragingly at her, right before the hat fell over her eyes. After about a minute, the hat screamed "RAVENCLAW!!!" and the smile fell off my face. But Jas smiled, and I decided that if she wants to be in the smart peoples group, she should be, even though I'm not.
The Ravenclaw table clapped like mad. A few people clapped from other tables, but I stood up, clapped like I'd die if I didn't, and screamed "go Jas!!!" Some people laughed, some people looked at me like I was crazy, which I kind of am. But Jas smiled at me and sat down.
After about a second, I calmed down, and sat down. Now more people were looking at me oddly, and I knew it was weird. I am weird. And proud!
"Why did you do that?" Said a voice from behind me. More British accents!!! It's a paradise!
I looked behind me. A boy with blonde hair was next to me. "She's, like, my bestest friend ever!" I said to him.
"Well, it was really weird." He said, and then stuck out his hand. "Aaron Fell."
I shook his hand, and said "Jun- I mean Eva Night." I said. Then, "Wait, I saw you this morning. You were with James!"
He looked shocked. "You remember?"
"Uh, yeah. I'm not just some jerk. I grew up a normal person." I said to him, kind of hurt. "Wait, where's James?" I asked Aaron as the sorting ended. I noticed that only three other first years were sorted into Gryffindor, all guys, except Rose, who I could not find.
Aaron looked around, and shrugged. "I don't know."
Then Lovegood stood up, and started talking. I shut up.
"Hello! I don't have anything to really say, so dig in!" She said in a dreamy voice. I looked at the gold plates on the table, and suddenly they filled with food.
