"do you understand the severity of your actions ms.matthews?" dumbledore asks as i stand with professor flitwick and professor mcgonagall.

"yes sir," i nod, "it will not happen again."

"i should hope not," he smiles, "but i am afraid that you must face some punishment for your actions. this will be determined by your head of house. professor flitwick?"

"ah yes," the professor nods, "now, ms.matthews, normally i would assign something drastic for an action of this magnitude. but, considering that i have never had issues with you before, and that you are one of the top students in your year, i will grant you a more lenient punishment, just this once."

i silently thank merlin that i was placed in ravenclaw instead of slytherin as i see professor snape, draco's head of house, his face contorting into concern.

"headmaster, if i may," snape interjects, "ms.matthews broke mr.malfoy's nose, and he has been in the hospital wing since. surely, i should have some say as to her punishment."

"now severus, i do believe filius is correct in this matter," dumbledore speaks, "ms.matthews has never gotten into trouble before, so her punishment should not be severe."

professor snape mumbles, "however, if she causes trouble again, the punishment will not be as simple."

dumbledore shoots a stern look at me, and i nod, responding, "yes headmaster, i assure you, this was a one time occurrence."

"very well," professor flitwick nods, "your punishment will be detention with professor lupin tonight directly after dinner. he will decide what he needs your help with after i discuss the matter with him."

"thank you professor," i smile. the four professors motion that i am dismissed, and i take the opportunity to leave before professor snape can convince my head of house to change his mind.

i race to the great hall, joining cedric at the ravenclaw table. dinner has already started, but as soon as i sit he puts down his food.

"good, you're back!" he smiles, "i thought snape was hauling you to the dungeons."

"never," i smirk, "not even snape can resist my witty comebacks."

"how bad was your punishment?" concern spreads across his face, "if it's with snape, considering i'm a prefect, i can monitor to make sure you're okay."

"how lovely of you, my golden boy," i lean my head on his shoulder, "but, i think i might actually tolerate this punishment. it's just detention with professor lupin, he's the most relaxed of all the professors."

he sighs out in relief, "oh thank merlin, he's probably going to take it easy on you."

"that's what i'm hoping for," i smile, "anyways, i have to make my way to his classroom, detention awaits."

"don't do anything stupid vina!"

"i won't ced, i'm a ravenclaw!"

as the fifth year student assigned to detention enters my classroom my breath hitches in my throat.

she looks just like him.

i quickly compose myself and look at the student, prepared to assign her whatever work she has to do for the detention. to be quite honest, there is not really any work i have that needs to be done, so i am just going to ask her to complete a study session.

"good evening professor," she smiles, "i'm here to serve my detention."

"good evening ms matthews," i reply, "professor flitwick filled me in on your detention tonight. unfortunately, i do not have any tasks that i need help with, and i do not see a point in forcing you to clean the floors or school supplies."

"so instead, i figured i could help you with one of our lessons."

"i would really appreciate that professor," she says, "i was nervous that my detention would be with mr.filch. he tends to assign scrubbing floors and trophies as punishment."

i nod, "well, considering your class did not get to finish the boggart lesson, would you like to pick up on that?"

davina matthews agreed to finishing her boggart lesson, as she was one of the students who did not get to battle the boggarts earlier in the week.

as she steps up to the cabinet she takes a deep breath, preparing to fight her worst fear. as i open the cabinet the boggart appears in the form of the young students' biggest fear.

the boggart takes the form of a letter, being sent from st. mungo's hospital. it opens and a woman from my time at hogwarts is laying on the ground. she is dead.

i look over at davina, and a tear falls from her face.

"riddikulus," she utters, and the body turns back into a letter, the letter shredding itself into millions of pieces.

i shut the cabinet and walk over to her, "is everything okay ms.matthews?"

"oh yes professor, everything is okay," she nods, "it was just a boggart."

"would you like to talk about it?"

"actually, i would, if you don't mind," her voice strains while saying this.

i nod, and we both take seats, mine in front of her.

"i know you must be wondering who that woman was, so i should probably start there. that was my mother, penelope. she's been in and out of st mungo's for the last year. she worked within the ministry, so she naturally has a few people who dislike her. most were supporters of you-know-who. one of the days she was at work in the field last year, and a supporter cursed her. the symptoms come and go, so she doesn't have to stay at st mungo's permanently, but it's been getting worse. right after i got on the train in september i got a letter saying she was back there. and i've been petrified with fear ever since."

"i'm very sorry to hear that ms.matthews," i say.

"she's all i have. my father has never been in the picture, and all her friends are either dead or lost contact. her parents passed when i was little, so i never really knew them either. i've got no clue about who my father is, the only fact i have is that he was a wizard. she never liked to talk about him much, it made her upset."

"i believe she went to hogwarts the same time as you professor, did you know her? penelope matthews?"

i nod, "i actually knew her well, would you like me to tell you about her times at hogwarts?"
