Prologue
I was biting my lower lip again nervously. This would be my 3rd time this week that I got caught. I was so sure my sister hates me now. She keeps bailing me out and I know she'll get tired eventually and just let me rot here.
"Hey kid, your sis' here again," the guard said and unlocked the gait cell. I stood up quickly and walked up. I instantly spotted my sister leaning by the wall with an angry expression on her face.
I lowered my head and walked past her, but not without saying thank you first. She rolled her eyes and grunted at me.
We walked out of the jail house quickly. We both hated it there. It was hot and noisy and well, it stinks as well.
"Honestly," my sister started. "When will you learn?" She sounded irritated. Well, she has a right to be considering she's the one who keeps bailing me. But then again, I never asked her to.
"Oh shut up, Roxie," I said at her. She blinked, and then shoved me. "What the fuck?!" I hissed at her. "I never ask you to bail me, don't I? So stop getting mad at me! I don't need your help."
"You're my only family left. Trust me, if we had any relatives left, I'd leave you there."
"Well sadly, it’s just you and me."
"Sadly, yes. But I won't be stuck with you for eternity. Senior year's starting and I'll get into Harvard and you'll get..." she trailed off. She's probably thinking what'll happen to me. Even I don't know what's going to happen to me after High School. "Well, you'll probably find a job and live on your own. You love that kind of life, don't you?"
I ignored her and we walked back to our house. Roxie and I have been thrown into foster families since we were born. Our mother didn't want us. I mean, seriously, she's such a sad excuse of a mother. She could have left us at a random person's house or maybe into an adoption house or agency but no, she left us inside a freaking dumpster. We were lucky that Roxie here didn't shut up and a hobo took us to an adoption agency. I guess, even our foster families didn't want us. They considered us rats! Actually, it was just me they didn't want. They liked Roxie best all the time but she said she won't leave me. Funny, how when we were younger, she doesn't like to be 10 feet away from me and now she can't stand the sight of me. Well, screw her.
Our house was left to us by our last foster family. The agency decided that since we'll be 18 soon, we can live by ourselves. 'Course, we still get monthly visits from them but still, we actually have a house of our own.
Our house was small. Fit for 2 people which was just right for us. We're not particularly tall. Roxie and I stand at least 5'2. We both have curvaceous figures but we still looked very different from each other. Roxie has pale blue ice cold eyes that can intimidate you and walnut brown hair. I got stuck with plain old raven hair and brown eyes.
Don't even get me started on our skin tone. Roxie looks as pale as a ghost while I look like I'm always tanned. The lucky thing though, we both have perfect smooth skin. We don't even use anything!
"Have you eaten dinner?" Roxie finally spoke. I fumbled for my house key in the pocket of my jeans and handed it to her (She lost hers a few weeks ago. Stupid. I know). I shook my head and pushed past her as I made my way in. I climbed up the stairs and slammed my door as I got in my room.
I collapsed on my bed and relished how good and soft it feels. After I while, I started dozing. Then my alarm went off. I looked up and saw that it's 6 am. I groaned. I can't believe I actually slept for 8 hours when it only felt like 2 seconds.
I got up anyway. I changed into my school uniform; A long sleeved white linen shirt, black blazer, a gold and black stripped tie, a grey skirt that is just below the knee and finally, long grey socks. Of course, I don't like playing by the rules. I wore my uniform differently. I roll up my linen shirt up to my elbows, undo a few buttons just above my cleavage, loosen my tie a little bit, hitch up my skirt, and instead of socks, I wear snake skin stockings.
I brushed my hair and teeth and checked myself in the mirror. Yep. I look school ready. Then I smelled Roxie's cooking. I mentally started counting. 1... 2... 3
"DAPHNE!!" Roxie shouted from downstairs. I rolled my eyes and walked out of my room. My sister had made me pancakes and bacon for breakfast. Unlike me, she loves obeying the rules. She wears her school uniform right and she's a straight A student. I don't doubt she's likely to become president someday. I sat on the dining table, picked up my fork and started picking at my food.
"I got a text from Jane today," she said. I didn't look up. Jane was her best friend and they're both likely to get into Harvard after High School.
"So?"
"So, she said something's new this year," she said in her high pitched excited voice. I rolled my eyes.
"Rox, it’s a new school year. Of course there's going to be some changes," I said in my well-duh voice.
"I mean big changes. Did you know that only 1/4th of the original staff at school aren't fired? They said that there would be new teachers."
"Well, that's good! I'm starting to wonder when those old goats are going to retire."
"Daphne!" she scolded. Sometimes she acts like my mother. "Don't be like that. They're all actually really nice and I'm going to miss them all."
"You're only going to miss them because now you won't get recommendation letters from them." I glance up and narrowed my eyes at her. I'm daring her to tell me I'm wrong. She narrows her eyes back at me then sighs and looks away. She sips at her cup of coffee. I snickered. "See?"
"Why are you so..."
"So what?" I glared at her and she rolls her eyes. Then she walks over to the window and squints.
"We have new neighbors," she said, changing the subject. I finish my pancakes and bacon and stand up beside her. She's right. We do have new neighbors. I watched them carefully.
I noticed a tall boy unloading his car. He drives an Audi A3 by the way. Wow. He's accompanied by a tall blond girl. Then that's when it hit me. They're both other worldly beautiful! I tried to get a better look at the two but Roxie's watch alarmed. Meaning, we're going to be late for school if we don't get out now!
I grabbed my backpack that's sitting at the couch in the living room and ran outside with Roxie behind me. I glance at the boy's direction and noticed he was looking at me. He startled me and I tripped, good thing my sister grabbed my arm quickly and hauled me up before I did some serious damage on myself. I looked back; he was now watching me with that weird look on his face. He looked at me like I was an interesting book or TV show. I know that look. I smirked back at me but he just shook his head.
