Chapter 2: And so it begins…

“Guess what,” Roxie says beside me. I arched an eyebrow at her and she smirks at me mischievously. I didn’t even have to ask what was up because I know she’s going to tell me anyway. She pulled me away from Xander on our way to class. “Well? Aren’t you even going to ask what?” I shook my head and she rolls her eyes. “Whatever. Anyway, Xander was right. Gabriel did apply and he got the job.”

“That’s it?” I asked and she nodded. This time, I’m the one who rolls my eyes. “That’s all you’re going to tell me?” she nods again. “I should go now before the bell rings.” I move cautiously away from her and she grabs my arm and pulls me back again in front of her.

“Look,” she starts. “I think it’s a little weird that things are changing all of a sudden. Did you notice that a lot more people are going to church nowadays?” I shake my head.

“How should I know? I don’t even go to church.”

“See? That’s your problem.”

“What?”

“You’re always locked up in your little world.”

“Did you just drag me away just so you could scold me? You’re not my mother, y’know.”

“Yeah, but I am 3 minutes older than you,” she said. I rolled my eyes, smiled at her and pushed her away. I didn’t want to be late for class even though I dislike Ms. Jophiel.

Xander smiles warmly as I approach him. He brushes his hair away from his eyes and walks beside me. “What was that all about?”

“Apparently, she noticed your brother,” I said and he laughs.

“He has that effect on people.”

“You both do,” I say and he rolls his eyes. I nudge him. “You do know that you are good looking, right?” He nods. “Vain mofo.”

“Mofo?”

“It means, mother fu-“

“I know what it means,” he interrupts. He sighs and stops in front of my classroom. He peeks inside and waves at Ms. Jophiel. “Don’t ever use that word again.”

“What? Mofo or Fu-“

“Both,” he interrupts me yet again. I scowl at him and he narrowed his eyes at me.

“Alright, Mother,” I say sarcastically and he grins.

“I better get to class. Be nice and learn something,” he says, patting my shoulder and running off into the other direction. He has Music with his brother. I forgot. He must be excited that he gets to spend an hour with him. Or maybe not.

I went inside and sat at the very back. This time, I noticed that Ms. Jophiel seems to be glowing. I squinted my eyes at her. Wait, she’s glowing? Either what I’m seeing means she really IS glowing because of a new skin care product, or I’m in dire need of glasses.

I chose to believe the first one because it makes much more sense. Truthfully, my eyesight is excellent! I think.

“Now, class, shall we begin?” she asks and in answer, we all nodded. She smiles again and starts discussing something about Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. “Do you all have your copies with you?”

I yanked my copy of Romeo and Juliet out of my bag and flip it to the page written on the board.

“I’d like someone to read it aloud,” she said and scans the room. There’s like 15 students here, not very hard to pick one. She could pick Matt, he has a very natural big voice orSydney! She’s a very smart and outspoken girl. But no, she picked me. Great. “Oh, Daphne. Would you care to read this for us?”
