Chapter 5: Playing With Fire

So, ever since that faithful and entertaining Sunday, Roxie and I decided to take up every single chance we can get with Xander and Nate to take us there. Frankly, it was awkward attending it without them.

With them around, nobody dared to actually bully us. Just because we’re surrounded by Christians does not necessarily mean that they’re the nicest people around. Molly is actually a bitch. I no doubt think that she might be Lucifer in disguise.

She just loves making everybody hate her. Actually, I don’t think that was what she was after. Maybe she just wanted people to know that she herself is a faithful Christian. Because honestly, when you’re around people like Xavier, you sometimes feel powerless to them. Guess Molly wants everybody to know that no one can overpower when it comes to her religion.

“Yo, dude,” Xander snaps his fingers in front of me. I am returned to reality. “Am I boring you?”

“No, not really,” I say, shaking my head and staring down at my sandwich.

“Seems like it to me,” he mutters and returns to read his book. “Honestly though, why would they write a book where the kid is obviously intrigued with his cousin or a divorced women seeking love from a priest. Or grandparents who still cheat on each other after 37 years of marriage!”

“What are you reading? Seems like a lot of baggage for those people,” I say glancing at his book. He shows me the cover. “’The Mephisto Club?’ Honestly, you shouldn’t be reading books like that.”

“And why not?”

“Because you’re religious as fu-“ I stop. Xander was glaring at me but there was a hint of challenge in his eyes. He was daring me to go on but I know better. He’s right. Sometimes, there’s no point in cursing anymore. “Whatever.”

“That’s what I thought you said and yes, I do know how you feel about my religion and I guess it’s just a really good book so why shouldn’t I read it?”

“Because you complain way too much!”

He shrugs then smiles. He quickly puts the book back inside his bag and leans on the table, propping his head on his hand. “Right, so let’s talk about something else.”

“Okay,” I say. “What do you want to talk about?”

“Your sister.”

“Look, if you fancy her, then go ask her out. She likes the attention boys are giving her now, you know.”

“That’s because you two or going to be 18 in a few months. When’s your birthday again? Oh yeah, Christmas, right?” he asks. I never should’ve told him my birthday. Oh wait, I didn’t. Roxie did.

I roll my eyes at him and nod. He grins.

“What should I get my best girl for her birthday?”

“First of all, I’m not your girl. I’m just your best friend. Capiche?” I say while threateningly pointing my water bottle at him. He laughs and swats it away.

I laugh along with him, then the doors open. We all turned to look, Gabriel strode in, hands in his pocket, his shoulder bag was swinging by the side of his back and he looks so confident, as if he didn’t care and maybe, he really doesn’t.

I soon notice that the female population inside the cafeteria is now gawking at him. I roll my eyes as the girls all swoon when he nods and smiles at all of them. Then, I realize that he’s walking towards our direction. I sat up straight and tried to look as if he didn’t have the same effect on me. Well, it was an epic failed attempt.
