Esha Singh was the most popular and beautiful girl in St. Thomas. But unlike Ashish, she had a attitude of being popular. She was poles apart from Ashish and often bullied the weaker around. She had some accomplices and side kicks who followed her around the school. But they certainly weren’t friends. They knew nothing about Esha but followed her around for the sake of fame. They often started rumours about her and blame someone else but even though knowing the source of the rumours, Esha didn’t do anything for she was afraid they could start more rumours about her. Even though she seemed as a stone-hearted person who does not care about anyone else except her own self but she too, like others was vulnerable.
“Is he home.” Esha asked her mother as she entered her home.
“No, he is out for a few days.” Her mother said turning her face away from Esha.
“I already know that bastard has swelled your face after drinking all of his alcohol.”
“It was my fault only. He was tired after a long day at work and I delayed in giving him his dinner. I got all I deserved.”
“You can convince yourself saying that but I won’t listen. I will punch him straight on his jaw someday.”
“Ssh Esha. He is your father. Don’t say things like that about him. Respect him.”
“Respect should be two sided. He doesn’t deserves respect if he won’t respect you. Mom, come out of this male dominated thinking. Men and woman are considered equal now. He has no right to raise a finger on you. You are his wife not his personal property.”
“Enough of this now. He is good only. He just has a temper problem. He loves me and you very much.”
“Wake up mom. He loved you. He does not anymore. It won’t be a surprise if he has an affair going outside.”
“Don’t speak nonsense. Go and wash your hands and feet. I have made aloo ke paranthe for lunch.”
“The conversation has ceased but not ended yet. I am still telling you. Let’s run away. We will stay somewhere else. He won’t even care about us. All he cares about is his money.”
“I am going to market. We will talk later.” Her mom said and left the house.
All her life, Esha had witnessed her mother getting beaten up badly by her father. Often for many days her father would be absent, maybe doing his so called work. And when he returned home drunk and out of his senses, he used to hit her mother in front of her daughter’s eyes. Years passed but the frequent beatings of Esha's mother didn’t cease. Esha knew that if her mother raised her voice against him, he would be too scared to do anything. But alas, her mother’s traditional meaningless values restricted her from talking ill of her husband. Her mother’s silent personality had taught her not to show your vulnerability to the world as they can take your benefit.
To save her mother from the clutches of her evil father, Esha had researched about divorces and the possible charges on her father. She wanted her father to rot in prison until he realises his mistake and apologises to her mother. However until her mother would not agree to divorce and press charges on him, Esha’s entire research was in vain. Only if someone could make her mother understand.
