Chapter 29: The letter

27 10 2

“Mr Karim Khan, you are under arrest.” The police officer said.
It was unbelievably true. The thing we strived for is at last fulfilled. Rehan will get justice. His murderer will be punished for his mistakes. But still we couldn’t understand who called the police until another person entered the room.
“Dad.” Larry said and went ahead towards the door.
“What are you doing here?” I asked.
“Do you think police will come by itself?”
“How did you know about all this?”
“I heard you both talking. It was a mistake initially but I couldn’t stop myself from eavesdropping later.”
“You knew all this while?”
“Yes. I had called you yesterday when you were planning all this and maybe the mobile was in your pocket. The green button must have been pressed by mistake and I heard all your plan.”
“You weren’t angry at us for pulling off such a stunt?” Esha asked.
“I was. I was worried about what will happen. I wanted to stop you but I couldn’t. I knew how much it meant to you to get justice for Rehan and snatching this opportunity would maybe make you hate me. I didn’t want that. So I contacted my friend in the police department. I told him everything and we decided to let a person be behind you all the time.”
“We were being followed?” Larry asked.
“Yes. But that was important because it was for your safety.” The police officer said.
“You were watching all this. Why didn’t you help us earlier? What if he had a gun?”
“You see that building there?” the police officer pointed to a building in our front.
“Yes.”
“We have a sniper there. If her father had a gun with him and would take it out to point at you, the sniper would kill him by just pulling a trigger.”
“What if the windows were closed?” I asked.
“They couldn’t be.”
“How?”
“It was the task of Esha’s mother to keep them open.”
“What? She knew?” Esha asked and we stared with a shocked face. So many surprises for a day.
“Yes. We told her yesterday as soon as we knew about this. She even told that there was no need of a sniper because she would kill him alone if he even tried to attack you.” Larry’s father said and we couldn’t help but laugh.
“There is a problem but.” The police officer said.
“He never confessed on killing Rehan. He confessed about his father and Rehan’s parents but not Rehan. Even though we believe you, we need his confession to charge him for Rehan’s murder. Though he will be at least in jail for whole of his life. Though I wish I could keep him in Azkaban.” The police officer sighed.
“What?” Larry’s dad asked and Esha and Ashish had confused looks.
“Harry Potter reference.” I said with the police officer repeating at the same time. He was a fun guy, to be honest. Didn’t look as some strict grumpy police officer.
“Have you thought of a way to make him confess?”
“Hit him until he confesses.”
“Ask him first. If he does not tell when asked politely, then hit.” Esha said.
“Yes.”
We reached police station and Esha’s  father was already there. Laughing in the jail. Laughing even though the police were hitting him. It was evident he didn’t confess by polite means.
“Wait.” I told the constables hitting him with batons.
“What?”
“I think someone else ought to make him confess.”
“Who?”
“Esha’s mother.”
There was a silence on my suggestion for a while. Though no one said anything, everything agreed. It was surprising yet relieving that Esha’s mother stepped forward into the jail and slapped him hard. Very hard.
And the beating didn’t stop. She was literally taking out all her anger that was stocked inside her since years. All those times when he used to beat her when drunk came in front of her eyes and her raged her more.
And he gave up at last.
“I will tell. I will tell.” He said in a defeated voice.
“Say.”
“He knew everything. He too got to know what had happened and who am I. I threatened him to keep quiet but he refused. I even tried to shut his mouth with money. But that bastard didn’t agree.”
“Then?”
“I gave money to a waiter in the cafe in which he worked to destroy the cafe. But that brat still got away.”
“You did that? You killed Lucy?”
“I don’t know who is Lucy and I don’t care.”
“Then how did you kill him?”
“I followed him and one fine day crashed one of those hired trucks into his bike. But yet he survived. So I came into the hospital and switched off his ventilator. And that was the end of him.” He said laughing like a maniac.
“You are a beast.”
“Yes. And I will take care of you three also.” He said with a devilish grin.
“You can’t. You will be presented in the court tomorrow. Hope to never see you again.” The police officer said and we all left the police station.
Next day at court, he was sentenced for being hanged for four murders: Rehan, Rehan’s parents and his grandfather.
I met Larry outside the court crying as Esha left in a car.
“What happened?” I asked.
“She said we can’t be together. Even though he was her cousin, we don’t know if he forgave us.” Larry said in a low tone.
Larry’s dad took us home. All of it would be going to be better. Just not the Esha Larry part. Maybe it could be better too. Who knows.
“Can you clean the space behind the study table?” Larry’s father asked. It was a month since the incident and I had shifted temporarily to Larry’s house. Things had been good for Larry’s family as his dad had started earning more. Though there was a constant sadness on Larry’s face somedays, he was a lot better now then he was before. Also even though they weren’t together, Larry and Esha were still friends. Just friends. Until,
“What’s this?” Larry asked.
“It’s just a folded piece of paper.” I said.
“Let me see if something’s written in it.” He said.
“Okay.” I said and continued dusting drawer.
“Holy shit.” He said... no he screamed.
“What?”
“It’s a letter Rehan wrote to me. The day he died.”
