Outside the staffroom, talking with the janitor stood Esha Singh. We were classmates since we joined the school. We knew each other but we weren’t friends. It was obvious of course, she was the most popular girl in the school and no one even knew me by my name. I was referred as ‘that weird nerd who sits alone' most of the times.
Esha Singh was known for her mean attitude and bullying those weaker around her. I had been subjected to her terror for a day when I accidentally shoved her in recess. Even though she knew it was by mistake, it didn’t stop her from ragging me.
“Who do you think you are? Can’t you walk properly.”
“It was by mistake. I didn’t mean to push you.”
“I know how perverted you are. Don’t even dare to touch me.
“I am sorry.”
“Now don’t go crying to your mother.” she smirked.
“I can’t. I don’t have one.” I said and left. I was used to bullying but the sudden mention of my mom made me cry. It was a curse to be so weak and not have a mother.
However as the school ended and I left for home, a teary eyed Esha pulled me in a empty classroom.
“I am really sorry. I didn’t meant to hurt you. I didn’t know about your mother.”
“It’s okay.” I said, shocked at the fact that Esha was crying. She was popular at being mean to everyone and tears were something I never imagined her with. Even though she was beautiful, I always hated her because of her bad attitude. But that day something was different. I realized she, too was kind but preferred not to show it to others. I had fallen for her thereafter and didn’t miss a chance to watch her.
Spending two weeks with Esha after school was a aspect which made me look forward to the task of cleaning schools. Though I was afraid that nothing would happen and maybe they won’t even talk, I hoped for the best.
“Hey! I am Rehan.” Rehan greeted her.
“Hi. I am Esha.” She said.
I don’t know why but I felt a pang of jealousy. Though the angry emotions for Rehan and Ashish for landing me up in a punishment had dropped on witnessing Esha, it had risen again on the possibility of this newly developed friendship.
Three weeks passed. Ashish and I offered Rehan and Esha help in their extra week. Few apologies made everything alright between Rehan and Ashish. Also, as Ashish too was popular around the school, he was already friends with Esha and knew her true nature besides me. It didn’t took long for Esha to be friends with me too. After all that work up and cleaning up, we had decided to go to a cafe nearby.
“What about ‘Coffee Paradise’? It’s nearby and the cold coffee is amazing there.” Esha suggested.
“NO.” Rehan said suddenly. “We should go to Pizza Hut. I haven’t had a pizza since ages.”
It was Rehan’s uncle’s coffee shop where Rehan worked. It felt good to me to know that he trusted me alone with that information. Being trusted about something important was the best feeling according to me.
That day I felt like I was nothing different. Though they all had different talents and were quite popular, they never looked down at me as someone to be pitied on. This defined friendship for me. Relationships, crushes and our weirdest secrets were discussed with a pizza in between.
All those weeks, I was having a weird dream before I woke up. A girl used to be standing near the door of my room looking outside . But as I walked up to her, she disappeared. But that night after returning home, when I had the dream, the girl turned. Esha was the girl of my dreams.
