“Hey, what happened?”
“I had a fight with Rehan.” She said. I could sense her dry tears from across the phone. I regretted instantly for falling asleep.
“Why?” I asked in a concerned tone.
“He’s acting a little strange from last few days. I don’t know what has gotten into him.” Esha said. But her casual tone made me wonder if this was the reason she cried.
“Do you want to talk about it?” I asked her in a concerned tone.
“Yes. Can we meet today?” she asked in a cheerful tone which made me doubt my earlier assumption about Esha’s dried tears.
“Where?”
“Anywhere.”
“Can you come at my house? I have some work pending so I can’t come out until I complete it.”
“Okay sure.” She said.
Though I was curious about her reason to talk, I didn’t cease to try to make the house perfect. Though it would be awkward for me to hear her feelings of love for my best friend, I prioritised her happiness over mine.
I saw Rehan’s father’s wristwatch in our drawer while I was cleaning up everything. I decided to remind him to take it back as it was precious to him.
My phone vibrated twice in my pocket but at the same time I heard someone knock the door and I went to open it. Esha entered the house and I was trying to not stare at her. Trying not to stare at her was a basic struggle.
“Hey.” She said shrugging.
“Hiii.” I said trying not to blush.
“Is everything okay? You seem quite red at face.” She giggled.
“I... No. Everything is okay. Don’t worry.”
“Okay then. Can I sit?”
“Of course. Think as if it’s your own house.”
“Thanks.” She smiled at me. Damn that smile had my heart. It took me a minute to realise Esha is my best friend’s girlfriend.
“What did you want to talk about?” I asked before my brain could get all mushed up thinking about Esha.
“I don’t know.”
“What?” I asked.
“I don’t know how to say.” She said her cheerful smile turning into a frown.
“What do you mean?”
“Leave it. You will judge me if I tell you.” She said to my disappointment. Esha would be the last person in my life to be judged by me.
“I won’t. You know that.” I said with a genuine smile.
“I want to breakup with Rehan.” She said solemnly. Though I felt bad for Rehan as he loved Esha dearly, a part of me was happy. After realizing that feeling, I immediately hated that part.
“What do you mean?” I asked her.
“Don’t you know the meaning of breakup?” she snarled. Some girls can change from weepy mood to angry mood in no time.
“I mean, why do you want to breakup?”
“He is all good but he is different from me.”
“Opp-" I tried to say but she interrupted me.
“Don’t even try that opposites attract concept with me.”
“Why?”
“Because it can’t be true every time.”
“Yes.” I agreed as I didn’t want to argue with Esha.
“He is like all serious. I thought he joked and all. Also, I fell for his looks to be honest. I know you must be thinking that I was just playing around with him.”
“No. I am not.” I said.
“I loved him but I realized he was not the one for me. I am this crazy girl who has thousands of mood swings. I want someone who can handle my tantrums and my flaws and who knows my ‘It’s fine’ means I want your attention.” She said all at once.
“You don’t have any flaws Esha.” I said as I didn’t know what to say and also it was true.”
“I have.”
“You are perfect the way you are.”
“I like you Larry.” She said after a long awkward silence.
“What?” I exclaimed with my mouth open.
“I have this small crush on you from some time.”
“Wait, is this a prank?”
“No. Of course not.”
“How can you like me?”
“Why can't I?”
“I am not good looking. Nor do I have six pack abs. Why would you even notice me? I am just a normal average person.” I said.
“Yeah it was my mistake to propose Rehan on his looks. Even though his nature is good, he is not my type I guess. He can get better girls than me.”
“Trust me, no one is better than you.”
“Ohh. Is it true?” she asked coming towards me.
“Yes.” I said moving forward too even though I was so anxious.
“Am I really so good?” she said coming so close that there was no distance between us.
“Yes.” I said and she kissed me. The kiss was long but interrupted when the door was opened. I was afraid about Dad’s anger and I wished it wasn’t him. But the very second I saw Rehan staring at us from the doorway, I wished my last wish would have been fulfilled.
“Let me explain.” I tried to say but he pushed through me took something from the desk, supposedly his father’s watch and left something else.
I took out my phone to call Ashish to help me make Rehan understand when I saw one missed call from him and two messages.
Rehan: I have to pick my father’s watch from your house.
Rehan: I have your house’s spare keys. I will take it myself don’t worry.
