“Wait, it can’t be true.” Esha said looking at her father’s face on the screen.
Karim Khan(a.k.a Pratham) whose 20 year old photo could be visible on the screen shocked each and everyone of us. Who knew things were going to be so interesting? We had a murder to solve, the murder of one of their best friends and the supposed murderer was Esha’s father. This was getting really twisted but we couldn’t think anything else than solving this case.
“How can he be Karim Khan?” Ashish quipped.
“I don’t know. I really don’t know.” I said.
“Why will he kill Rehan? What does he has to do with him?” Esha said.
“I don’t know why will he kill Rehan but he had something to do with Rehan.” Larry said after a while.
“What?” we asked.
“He was related to Rehan. He was Rehan’s uncle. I told this a while earlier.”
“Yeah. I forgot.” I said.
“This means Rehan was my brother?” Esha asked.
“Umm.” Larry said and we realised the awkwardness of the situation.
“I guess so.” Ashish said.
“Wait. So now you are Muslim?” I asked.
“Probably. I don’t know what’s happening.” Esha said and slumped down on the couch with her head in her hands and we could hear tiny sobs.
“What should we do now?” I asked after I saw Esha finish her crying and put up a smile like nothing had happened. If it were me in her position, it would take me at least few days to get over such a situation. And the stereotypes say boys don’t cry. Irony isn't it?
“I want to confront him.” Esha said.
“We can’t.”
“Why?”
“We need proof.”
“Why? What? I want to talk to him about this.”
“Please wait Esha.”
“Why?”
“YOU KNOW RIGHT WHAT HE DID TO REHAN? I CAN’T FREAKING LOSE YOU ALSO.” Larry screamed and we all were taken aback. We had seen Larry cry, get angry but never seen him scream. The pitch of his showed how concerned he was about Esha and maybe it worked for Esha too because she didn’t try to argue further.
“I know a person, like a real techno-geek, who can find deleted files from this.” Ashish said to break the ice.
“Call him and text me his email.”
Ashish called him and I sent the video files on that person’s email. He said it will take a day to complete the processes.
Ashish and Esha left as it was getting late and it was time for Larry’s dad to be back.
“You want to talk?” I asked Larry after his father had gone to sleep.
“About?”
“What’s happening?”
“Unless you can bring back Rehan, no.”
I didn’t say anything but sat there silently and not saying anything.
“I am sorry.” Larry said after a while.
“For?” I asked.
“I have been rude and harsh on you.”
“You have not. And you should be sorry. Not for being rude or anything but keeping everything inside you. I sensed your frustration when you screamed and it bore the stress of all these days. It’s nothing like you should be strong everytime. You can be vulnerable. You are a human and you should take out all your thoughts once in a while.” I said a little surprised at how philosophical I can be sometimes.
“Hmm. I am a little ashamed of myself. I have not been a good friend to Rehan.” Larry said.
“It’s not your fault. Everyone makes mistakes.”
“No. I mean it like last few days I was more worried of Esha’s answer to me than getting justice for Rehan.”
“Don’t worry. It’s not wrong to think about your happiness. Just sleep for now.” I said and he nodded.
Next day, Ashish’s friend sent us the deleted videos. And it contained exactly what we thought it would.
“See that’s us entering the ward. Esha’s dad is standing behind looking at us all.” I started to say.
“Rehan is waking up. His eyes goes towards me but not to me but to her father who is standing behind me.” Larry said and it felt for a while that we were in a cricket stadium listening to the commentary.
“I told you it was not you he blamed.” Ashish said.
“We should take this to the police.” Esha said.
“Is it enough evidence?” Larry asked.
“Wait. There’s one more video in this file.” I observed and announced.
It was of the night when Rehan died. I started it and I saw Rehan sleeping on his bed until Esha’s father entered the room and switched off the ventilator. If we weren’t horrified at his attempt at killing Rehan, this made us stare at the screen with shock.
“Shit. What?” Larry said trying to control his voice.
“We have to take this to police station. He needs to be behind the bars.” Esha said without wasting a bit of a second.
“Esha, but if this comes out everyone will bully you and your mother and you have to face many problems.”
“So what? Only people will hate me. If we keep this hidden, I will hate myself and I don’t want to live with that feeling.” Esha said in an angry tone.
Her answer was enough indication for us to leave for the police station. We took two rickshaws. Larry and me in one and Ashish and Esha in one. We reached there and got out of the rickshaw.
“Everything is going to be alright at last.” I said.
But if jinx exists, I did jinx the situation by saying everything will be alright.
