Kayla wasn't ready to do this. She didn't know if she could fully trust Officer Wilson with her secret. Plus, she wasn't sure if Chase was bluffing about having him wrapped around his finger. But her dad Troy seemed to think highly of Officer Wilson, so Kayla would take her chances.
She had been scared to go to the police or Shore Patrol the day Chase attacked her, but Michael had been in holding for two damn days already, and she was withholding some key information that could release him.
When Kayla stepped into Officer Wilson's office, it smelled of burgers, fries, and donuts. He was trying to gobble down what was left of his lunch. He motioned her to sit down while he was trying to swallow and drink a coke at the same time.
"Hey Kayla, how are you holding up?" he finally asked, when his airway was no longer blocked.
"I'm okay," she answered.
The two sat in silence for a few moments until Officer Wilson spoke.
"So, what can I help you with?"
Kayla chewed on her bottom lip. She wished so bad she could ask for her father's guidance in this matter, but she didn't want him to know either.
"Um, I just wanted to tell you again, that Michael hasn't done anything wrong," she said shakily.
Wilson let out his breath. He figured this was why she was here and why she was so skittish.
"Look Kayla, I already took your statement. I know you want to help him, but let me do some more investigating and--"
"He is innocent! I know Chase turned him in. But Chase lied about all of this!" Kayla yelled through tears. She couldn't control herself. She was so damn sick of being this emotional. She had cried a river right before she even came to his office.
Wilson stopped mid-sentence with that accusation. He cocked his head to the side and tapped his fingers on his desk.
"What do you mean?" he asked.
"He told me. Some girl that accused Michael, was told to do so by Chase," Kayla explained.
"And why would he tell you, of all people," Wilson questioned.
Kayla wasn't ready for this, but she had to get it off her chest if it meant saving Michael.
"He, uh...he attacked me," she whispered, while staring down at his desk.
"Excuse me?"
Kayla looked up at him and told him again. "He attacked me at his apartment, two days ago. The day Michael was arrested."
"Have you reported it to the police?"
"No, and please don't say anything to anyone," Kayla begged sliding to the edge of her chair, leaning on his desk. "I can't have my father or Michael knowing. Especially Michael. He would just get into even more trouble."
Wilson leaned back. He was so fucking sick of this shit. He truthfully just wanted it to all go away.
"Kayla, you understand the conundrum I'm in, right? Chase accuses Michael of rape, and now you accuse Chase? See where I'm going with this?"
Kayla sighed. "All I'm asking is that you ask this girl again if Chase made her tell you that Michael raped me. Because she's lying, and he asked her to."
And with that statement, she grabbed her purse and stood.
"Kayla?" Officer Wilson called to her before she could walk out.
"Yes?"
"If Chase is lying about all of this with Michael, and he did attack you, I will call the police and have them haul his trifling ass to jail. And it won't take long for word to get around about what he's done. I just wanted to give you a heads up on that."
Kayla shook her head. She would pay that price later, but she wanted Michael out of there more than anything.
