El's pissed. And no, I don't mean she's drunk. I mean she's fucking furious- and reasonably so.
I haven't had a chance to check up on her yet, but I didn't need to. I already knew. I think a part of me would be more worried if I walked out of this damn tower and saw that she was her normal cheery self.
When I tried to leave the first time, dragging El out of here with me, the door only transported one of us out and I found myself face-to-face with a large, solid, wooden door.
I tried to demand that Stregobor let me leave, but all he said was, "We have more important matters to discuss." And carried on telling me about how Renfri was actively hunting him down and needed to be stopped.
I wish I could say that I was as attentive as I should've been, but I wasn't. A part of my mind was whirling, figuring out a way to get to El to make sure she was safe. I doubted that Stregobor would've done anything to harm her, seeing as to how he needs my help. Still, I needed to see her with my own eyes.
"She's resistant to magic," Stregobor says, snapping me back to reality.
"That's impossible in humans."
"Not mutated ones. She's chased me for years bent on revenge. And now she's tracked me here, just as you arrived. Destiny." He states, "Kill her. I'll pay you anything."
"I kill monsters."
"The kikimora kills because it's hungry, Renfri kills for pleasure. She is a monster." He argues, "She is the last of Lilit's women. And she possesses the power to destroy us all."
"I don't believe anyone has that power."
I turn to leave, hurrying to make my exit. I can't think. Not if I don't know for sure that El is safe.
"With the fate of the Continent at stake, is that a chance you're willing to take?" He stops me, "There's your rhyme. Killing Renfri is the lesser evil."
"Evil is evil, Stregobor." I pause, but only to give Stregobor my parting words. "Lesser, greater, middling... it's all the same." I sigh, "I'm not judging you. I haven't only done good in my life either. But now, if I have to choose between one evil and another, then I prefer not to choose at all."
"You say you kill monsters." Stregobor says, his voice softer now that I've started walking away, "Maybe you might want to start with the one closest to you."
My fist clench, but I ignore him, reining in my temper. The damn fool doesn't even know what the fuck he's talking about and the last thing I need is for him to be planting these ideas in El's head. There's one thing he got right though, and that is that El's definitely not human.
I pass through the large set of doors which disappear around me, humming with magic as it lets me out on the other side.
Relief fills my chest as I spot El sitting on Roach, her swinging her legs back and forth as they dangle off the side of Roach. Her arms are crossed over her chest, her brows furrowed and her lips set in a pout which I would normally find adorable if not for the situation at hand.
Her eyes snap up as if she senses my presence, flashing with anger. El leaps off of Roach, landing on her feet before she stomps towards me.
