The leg work begins
Detectives Richards and Martinez trolled through detail after detail relating to the life of Cathy Brock. They were determined to fit together the life of this young woman from the day she entered this world until the day of her untimely death and the reasons therein. They began by visiting Births and Deaths for the State of Florida based in Tampa. It was a place Martinez had never had the occasion to visit but for Richards it had become a home from home. Many of he and Soborno's investigations had required the specific details held in this Mausoleum of a building served by people clearly hand picked for the services required. Miss Spigot-Smith was the first point of contact. Brock, Brock, Brock she kept repeating over and over again as her fingers seemed to be playing an endless tune on her computer keyboard. "Are you overly positive that the said Catherine Brock was born in Florida? she asked, looking at Detective Martinez above her nose balancing glasses. "The only Brock's I can find are either too old or too young to be the person you are looking for" "We are not at all sure Miss Spigot-Smith but as in your line of work you come very highly recommended, we thought that we would start our search with you" replied Rusty Richards, his smile displaying a sarcastic grin. "It is said that if someone is to be found then Spigot-Smith is the go to name" "Well I must admit" said Spigot-Smith, "It is nice to be appreciated and even in a lady of my stature a little flattery can go a long way. Therefor it is with regret that I must inform you that the young lady was not born in the State of Florida where Brock it would seem is a very uncommon name, but not so much in other States, therefor I have entered the Archives of both North Carolina and Arkansas and low and behold your Miss Catherine Brock was born in the afore mentioned on the 6th of August 1985 to a Samantha and William Brock in the town of Greenville. Technology is a great thing, don't you think? she said with the same sarcastic grin as Richards had previously displayed. The following morning the detective duo were on a flight to Charlotte and a short hire care ride south to Greenville where the early life of Cathy Brock soon fell into place. She was born Catherine Louise Brock, her middle name being that of her late Grandmother on her father's side. Growing up in a working class community, her father John Brock was in construction. Her neighbors from around this time described her as a very pretty young girl who liked playing with dolls and dressing up in her older sister Shannon's clothes. Cathy attended Bridgestone Elementary School where her mother Helen Brock was a supply teacher. The one downside in the young life of Cathy Brock according to local residents were the constant arguments between her parents mostly driven by her fathers increasing alcohol problem. By the age of twelve the family had relocated to Orlando Florida where John Brock had secured a three year contract working on further extensions to Disney Land. Living in the local town of Summertime Valley Cathy was enrolled along with her sister at the local Lance Granville Junior High School named after a now deceased businessman who left a substantial sum of money to the town of Summerville. Teachers and some old friends who remembered Cathy Brock commented on her gradual change from being in the top tier of the IT girls of the school to a more radical thinking, boy dressing, aggressive speaking, young woman constantly at loggerheads with the establishment. This in many ways was related to the sudden death of her mother from a cancer related illness and her placement in care due to her fathers drinking. Shannon the older sister had gone off to university on a sports related scholarship and when at home lived with the family of a close friend. Cathy by the age of eighteen had decisions to make. She had not achieved the qualifications to enter a College or University and therefor in her mind the Armed Forces were her only outlet, three meals per day, a place to sleep all at zero cost. Army enlistment followed and in that moment the true mindset of this troubled young lady began to unravel. Cathy Brock enlisted in the US Marine Corp on the 24th of January 2003. Academically she would not have qualified for acceptance, but the military look favorably on teenagers from a troubled background priding themselves on being the alternate classroom to College or University. Cathy would begin her ten month training regime at the Red River Marine Camp based in Meridian Alabama where as early as week one she would be disciplined for insubordination when deciding to walk the last two miles of a ten mile run sighting that her feet were sore. For this her whole Platoon were ordered to run for five miles more while she stood and watched. As the weeks and months passed reports in the officers logs would describe a young woman of average intelligence with a high disregard for authority, this when aligned with her monthly psychiatric reports pointed to her childhood and an upbringing where her father was a heavy handed man who mostly fueled by alcohol ruled over Cathy, her mother and her elder sister." Nevertheless" wrote her Sargent, "Cathy Brock is a very physically fit young woman who in all ways knows her own mind, and when placed under pressure has shown the qualities of a leader, something we look for in a great soldier". Mid December 2003 following what could only be described as a turbulent ten moths of training Cathy was off on her first posting abroad, Iraq. At first she seemed to have found her calling, the whole live or die situation keeping her mind occupied on what would happen next, no time for dwelling in the past. One report tells of her awareness when spotting a sniper at an obscure window of a school where children were playing during their break. She informed the Corporal by her side before slipping out of the side door of their vehicle. The Corporal ordered the driver to stop but no one was to exist. "Sit calmly" he said, "Leave this to Brock" Cathy made her way in a long loop which seemed to cover half the area of the complete Village before entering the school through a side door leading into what could only loosely be described as a kitchen. This area was at the moment unoccupied therefor the staff and pupils were unaware of her presence. She climbed the shell shocked staircase to the second floor where she could see the gunman lying in wait. Calmly making her way towards the sniper she took hold of him with one arm around his neck and the other covering his mouth in case as suspected he had accomplices placed around the village. Cathy pulled out her Marine Corp Knife a substantial weapon of around twelve inches long. As she spun her captive round her first instinct was to cut his throat but her hand had removed the scarf which had covered three-quarters of his face. "My god" she thought in her mind, "It is only a child, and a female child at that" Seeing the fear in the young girls face she wrapped the scarf around her face once more and with her hand loosely over her mouth she led the terrified child downstairs and back towards the waiting vehicle. The children played in the playground blissfully unaware of the mayhem that could have taken place. For Cathy Brock more Commendations were forthcoming but each were matched by Condemnations from her superiors for flagrant breaches of Military rules. Her career in the Marines ended abruptly when following an argument over racism with a black officer in the Camp Naffi, she struck him across the face with a pool cue and following a Court Martial Cathy Brock received a Dishonorable Discharge. Back in the US and only twenty two years of age she returned to her home on the outskirts of Orlando Florida where she began waitressing at a fast food outlet. This did not however inspire the aggressiveness and anger that she carried around like a rucksack on her back and within a few moths Cathy had applied to join the Prison service. On a vote of six to four from the interviewing panel she was accepted and placed on a new trial of what the called floating officers who at anytime be conscripted out to various child and adult prisons all over the State of Florida. Cathy Brock was in her glory, too much time spent in any facility would inevitably, in Cathy's mind create problems. She harbored a fascination for the seriously violent criminals, not child molesters or the like only the male and female inmates with a bad reputation. Unknowingly her fetish for these people would be recognized, not by her superiors but by the very people she looked up to and consequently she would fall under their control. They coerced her into bringing illegal drugs into the prison which through fear and nerves led to Cathy becoming addicted herself and her unusual movements alerted her fellow officers leading to her life as a Prison officer lasting only two and a half years followed by one year in Miami's notorious Parkland Female Penitentiary. During her time at Parkland Cathy corresponded with a male prisoner she had become over friendly with at a facility in the north of the State. They were due for release within two months of one another and arranged to meet in West Palm Beach. Her liaison was with Byron Meadows a well known Pimp and curator of young females for the great and the good of this affluent area. Cathy Brock quickly became a working girl and because of her striking beauty and physical build she became very sought after and very expensive. Cathy was living the life with high ranking Politicians, Businessmen and Actors among her clientele. Byron Meadows however was not satisfied and for some time the financial rewards in the adult film industry had not gone unnoticed. He pinned all of his aspirations on his prize possession, Cathy Brock and very soon the money was rolling in. On the night of the murders she was at Theo Taylor's house to discuss an upcoming movie, but as they say, practice makes perfect and things got a little out of hand. Was she the target? "It would seem not" said Rusty Richards, "We have learned almost everything about this unfortunate young woman's life and there is at this stage nothing to link her to our prime suspect, in fact as far as we know the two have never met, therefor it is unlikely that she was the prime target, but I said we knew almost everything about her life, there may be more skeletons, only time will tell"
