16: Recollections

It has been exactly one week since Kishimoto and I arrived in Sector 21.

These past few days, I’ve been different people, doing my part in trying to gather more information.  So far, the only good news is that Sector 20 agreed to help and has already sent over medical supplies.  The sick and injured have been receiving proper treatment, which I personally saw to while I was in Sergeant Akhmetov’s body.  However, the bad news is that the prison is continuing to fill up at a steady pace, which means we might not have much time left.

All this time, I’ve been itching to go back to Souseiki Dousa, but Kishimoto tells me day after day that it’s still not yet safe.  Despite all my instincts to leave, I decide to trust him anyway.  Still, I try to think of contingencies to rescue the revolutionists before the mass execution.

I’ve never stayed in the sector this long, and under different circumstances, I would have probably began to feel paranoid.  To be honest, Kishimoto is one of the reasons I’ve managed to stay sane and composed.  Knowing he’s nearby makes me feel safe, although this is something I might never admit to him.  His ego is big enough as it is.

Over the past few days, I’ve gotten more and more used to his presence.  I’ve also learned more things about him, like about his life in North America after he and his mother were sent there all those years ago.  He also talked to me about Omega Point—which was much like The Genesis Movement—and about all his friends back there whom he considered his family.

He also talked to me about how he met Warner and Juliette.  What surprised me the most was the fact that Juliette had been in love with someone named Adam Kent before she and Warner were together.  With the way Juliette and Warner act around each other, it’s hard to imagine her being like that with anyone else.

Kishimoto and I are having dinner today, and for a change, we decided to eat on the couch in the living room.  We’re eating something called vegetable biryani along with some steamed chicken and chilled, sweet tea.  We’re both on the couch, facing each other, sitting with our legs crossed.

“So, wait.  Adam and Juliette were childhood friends?”  I ask before taking another bite.

“Not exactly.  They did go to the same school for a couple of years.  Then something happened and Juliette was taken away.”  He doesn’t elaborate, and I don’t pry.  “Years later, Kent ended up enlisting and that’s how I met him.  Warner, as you know, was our sector leader.  He was also very obsessed with Juliette because of her ability.  So he sent Kent to spy on her, and they both ended up falling for each other I guess.  They even ran away together.”

I almost choke on my biryani.  “They what?  How?  What did Warner do?”

“Well, I followed them to Kent’s old house, where his little brother, James, still lived.  After that, I took them to Omega Point, where we realized Kent also had a gift.  He has the ability to disable another person’s gift, which is why Juliette could touch him without causing him pain.  But later on, we realized that Adam was unconsciously exerting effort to use his ability, and when he grew weak, Juliette’s touch could hurt him really bad.  And I know what it’s like to be touched by her.”   He seems to wince at a memory.  “Meanwhile, Warner’s gone off the bat searching for Juliette like a crazed hound.  Did I mention Juliette shot Warner?”

My eyes are practically bulging—at least, as big as they can get.  “Are you serious?”

“Totally.  On the shoulder, though.  Warner managed to capture them before I brought them to Omega Point.  He had Kent beat up and Juliette was not happy.”
