39: The Supreme Commanders
I gape at the general in disbelief. "You're supposed to be dead."
"Yet here I am." He chuckles humorlessly.
"Are you—are you the Supreme Commander?" I ask, trying to sound braver than I really am.
"Of Asia? Yes. I'm quite disappointed, really. I clearly overestimated you. I thought you'd have figured this out long ago." He sees me open my mouth again to say something else, but he quickly interrupts. "I'm sure you have plenty of questions on your mind, Miyuzaki-san, and they'll be answered soon enough. But before that, there's one more person I'd like you to meet: my wife."
As if on cue, Devin steps in and I don't think I could be any more aghast then I already am. I feel lightheaded and nauseous; like I'm in a bad dream and all I want to do is wake up.
Devin smiles down at me, the same motherly smile she's always used, and suddenly I feel angry. I'm so furious, I'm shaking.
"Devin, what is the meaning of this?" I demand. "I thought your husband was dead?"
"There was never a Gregory, lass. It's just a wee tale I made up. He was an ex-boyfriend from a lifetime ago. I just wanted to see if I could get my fella over here jealous." She looks amused as she slides the general a playful look. "Oh, but I do have a son. Two, in fact: Finnegan and Declan. You'll get to meet them when they return from their trip."
For the first time, Warner speaks up. He keeps his face devoid of any emotion as he directs his question to the woman I'd considered my mother for more than half my life: "Who are you?"
"Ah, I'm still the same Devin Quinn you know. But I'm not one for titles, really." She replies casually. "I wear many hats. I'm a wife and a mother. I'm the leader of Souseki Dousa. I'm the Supreme Commander of Europe. Oh, and I'm also one of the founders of the Reestablished Nations of the World."
My mind goes blank at this revelation.
"There were six of us who founded the Reestablishment: one from each continent. Your father, Paris, was one of us." Devin says this to Warner. "But he was a fool for getting himself killed. So were Valentina, Nenet, and Mason, who were the Supreme Commanders of South America, Africa, and Oceania, respectively. Isamu and I are the only two remaining founders."
"Not for long." Warner says coolly.
General Watanabe grins at him. "I like your gumption, boy. You remind me of Paris."
At this, Warner scowls. "I am not my father."
I take this moment to sneak a glance at the soldiers surrounds us. Make a mental note of where they stand. It would be easy to take them down once I morph into someone stronger, like Juliette. All it takes would be a few seconds timed at just the right moment, and Warner and I would be able to break free.
"I wouldn't attempt to transform into Juliette if I were you, Hiro." Devin says, and I tense as she holds my gaze. "These may look like ordinary military guns, but they're actually prototypes of my newest invention. Each gun is loaded with a very powerful serum, which I am sure Warner has already told you about. One wrong move and you could lose your ability for good. And that would be such a grand shame considering how vital you are to my plans."
"I won't be a part of your plans, Devin." I clench my fists. "And you can't make me."
"Well, I would encourage you to think twice before making your decision." She walks over to the control panel and punches in a few buttons. The screens before us go blank for a second. Then all at once, they show us a live feed from the surveillance cameras in the sector penitentiary. In one of the screens, I see Jun and all the others lined up on their knees, with their hands tied behind their backs. The screens also show us footage from the surveillance cameras in the compounds. Juliette and the rest of Team A have also been caught.
