38: Resurrection

The base has more soldiers today than I anticipated, and it's probably in light of the impending mass execution. I say a silent prayer that Team A manages to free everyone in time as we weave through the corridors lined with soldiers on both side. Warner and I hold our breaths and keep our footsteps as light as possible as we make our way towards the surveillance room.

Once we round the corner, we find two soldiers guarding the door. Warner and I crouch behind the wall again, even though no one can see us. I suppose we still haven't gotten used to the idea that we're not visible to the human eye.

"Stay here." I whisper to him. "I have a plan."

I have to do this very quickly. The instant I shift out of Kenji's body, anybody can see me. So as fast as I can, I transform into one of the soldiers who once delivered food to me a few weeks ago. After that, I take a deep breath and start walking towards them. The two soldiers immediately tense as they hear me approach, but instantly relax when they realize it's just one of their fellow combatants.

"Hey, what're ya doin' out of your post, Muñoz?" The older soldier between the two asks me.

"I was sent by Lieutenant Fukawa to round up everyone to the quadrant for an announcement." I reply.

"Really?" The younger one looks surprised. "We didn't get the memo this morning. Are you sure?"

"If you don't believe me, then fine." I shrug indifferently. "If you want to have to answer to the lieutenant, then you can go ahead and stay here all you want."

The two soldiers exchange glances.

"This better not be a joke again, Muñoz," the older one warns, "or else I'm gonna whop your ass for real this time."

"Hey, hey." I hold my hands up, feigning surrender. "I swear, man. It's the truth."

"What about Lemosnero?" The younger soldier asks his older partner, nodding towards the surveillance room.

"Is he the only one in there?" I ask.

"Yeah. We can tell him about it."

"That won't be necessary. The rest are already assembling in the quadrant and I'm sure you guys wouldn't wanna be late. I'll tell Lemosnero." I assure them.

"Thanks, Muñoz. We owe you one."

And within seconds, both soldiers are gone.

"I'm not sure whether to be impressed by you or aghast at those two idiots." Warner says as he walks over to me.

"Why not both?" I mentally cringe at my own lame attempt at being humorous. "Anyway, there's still one more soldier inside. I could go ahead and do the act all over again."

"No, that's fine. It wouldn't be fair to let you do all the dirty work." Warner replies. "Let me handle it."

To my surprise, he changes back into himself and stalks towards the surveillance room before flinging the door wide open. The soldier on duty inside jolts in shock, and when he sees Warner, he immediately reaches for his weapon.

"Warner! What do you think you're doing?" I hiss, panicked.

"Hey, you! Stop right there or I'll shoot!" The soldier growls as he aims his gun right at Warner.

Then in a flash, Warner swerves to the side and runs head-on towards the soldier, shoving him to the ground. The gun skids across the floor and stops at my feet, and before the soldier can even sit up, Warner is on top of him. With one punch to the side of his head, the soldier is immediately knocked unconscious.
