I have no beef with God for creating me really, none at all. But to the Angel that thought bringing me to Nigeria was a good idea, we'll fight the day we meet.
This is something I'm sure a lot of Nigerians have thought too but I swear none of them mean it as much as I do right now.
All I want is a moment of peace but do I get that?"MOYIN!!!!!." Well there's my answer I guess, no peace for me.
"I'm coming Ma." I shout back. I'm definitely going to get my ears dragged for shouting back like that but I could hardly care. I check the little clock beside my bed and the time says 10pm.
God no. Why me? Why? It's bloody 10pm. What can this woman want? This is why I should run away soon. Maybe I'd meet a nice person like those grass to grace movies.
I quickly make my way downstairs to find my mum in the living room, lying down and typing away on her phone. Clearing my features of all traces of annoyance and making sure my voice sounds normal and without grudge, I go to stand in front of the woman that decided to disturb me so late.
"Yes mummy, you called me." This earns me a look every Nigerian mother seems to be automatically equipped with, where they stare at you from head to toe and end it with a hiss that'll put even the serpent in the garden of Eden to shame.
"I called you since a year ago and it's now you're answering me abi? It's not your fault. Pass me the remote jare!" She shouts, pointing to the remote that's just by her feet, on the same couch she's on. If you're a Nigerian, you'll already recognize this top 10 annoying things parents do. Because this right here, takes the spot as No.1.
Deciding to not dig my grave this night, I take the remote and hand it over to her. "Anything else ma?" Please say no. Please say no.
"Ehen, yes." Fuck!. "Fun mi l'omi"(give me water). Wanting to get this over with and get back to my bed, I quickly give her a bottle water from the fridge and make my way to the stairs.
"Come back here." I pause, my foot already on the stairs. "Yes ma." I turn back facing her.
"I asked you to give me warm water and you're giving me cold water. Se o wa alright sha?".(are you okay?)"But mummy you just asked me to give you water, you didn't specify and you usually drink cold water that's why I gave you cold water." At this point I can feel the tears of frustration building up. All I want to do is sleep dear God.
"So now you're saying I'm lying abi Moyin?" She asks already standing up. Heaven knows the next thing would probably be to hit me with that flip-flop she's putting on, and honestly, I'd like to sleep without pains tonight.
I rush to her side, mumbling a "sorry ma", grab the water and rush back to the kitchen. I can hear her still shouting. I contemplate just giving her one of the bottles we didn't put in the fridge but she said warm water. Taking the electric kettle, I pour the cold water in it and heat it up a little. She said warm not hot after all. Once it's done and I've tasted it to make sure it's warm enough, I give it to her, telling her goodnight and rushing up to my room and quietly slamming the door. Notice the key word 'quietly'. As much as I want to slam the door to vent out my frustration, I'll love to live longer in this life, no matter how difficult it is.
I get under my covers, knowing that I won't be able to fall asleep soon anyway. I remove my phone from where it's charging beside the bed. Sockets by the bed side is one of the reasons I'm able to find the will to live. Checking my phone for any notifications, there are a few from IG, WhatsApp and other apps but I open my Instagram first.
Scrolling through the feed, I come across a post one of my classmates made a few hours ago.
"Boo got me a new phone for my birthday...I swear this man is the loml. Sadly school resumes in a few days" and above was a picture of the said boo and the phone he bought her. An iPhone. Of course it's an iPhone, idk which it is because I can't tell phone's apart to save my life but it had three cameras so I think it's the... latest? I'm not sure.
Anyway...good for her I guess. Although we all know this relationship of hers would end in tears, at least for the guy. I swear this is the third guy I've seen her with this August break but who am I to judge? I'm single as a pringle. After going through other apps and texting a few friends, all hyped for school to resume because who isn't tired of staying at home.
Just as I'm about to switch off my phone and charge it properly, I get a message from my twin brother. Yes I have a twin, unfortunately. Don't look at me like that. I know most people would want to have a twin brother who'd look out for you and be your best pal. That's the thing, mine is a nightmare. I'd gladly sell him off. Is anyone interested? Anyone?
