Minutes later the girls sat across from each other, the key Amity found between them on the ground. Amity had told Luz everything that had happened and she'd confirmed that King was indeed not with Luz when everything had gone down. Luz seemed excited more than anything, instead of nervous and skeptical like Amity. It was obvious she'd waited years for a mystery like this - it was kind of cute, yet concerning at the same time.
"What do you think the key is for?" Amity asked.
"No idea - but we better find out! Maybe it's like a treasure hunt!"
"I very much doubt it'll be like a treasure hunt."
"Oh, but you don't know for suuure..."
"Shut up." Amity chuckled, shoving Luz in the arm who acted like gravity had gone against her and pulled her down to the earth. She was so silly in moments that required the utmost attention and focus - the matter of finding the purpose of the little key was perhaps the most important thing the girls had ever done. There was no time for fooling around... but Luz was so endearing now the two had bonded a little, and she couldn't scold her for it. She was a geek through and through, even Amity couldn't stop that.
"Have you ever seen this owl symbol before? Maybe in your grandmother's chest?"
Luz thought for a moment, then promptly shook her head. "No, 'don't think so. you?" Amity sighed and shook her head. if she had, she would've started investigating already. She couldn't help but feel like the answers were already in plain sight, they just had to link the right clues together.
"Hey, did you bring that book with you?"
"I never leave the house without it." Luz answered proudly, reaching into her backpack instead of holding it upside down and shaking its contents out like last night. She pulled out the book, or journal as Amity saw it, and put it beside the key. Amity swung the thing open, already knowing the book was empty, but to her surprise...
Words had appeared on the first page of it! They weren't written with ink or pencil, but printed on like a normal book you'd find in a bookstore. She didn't suspect Luz, who also had her mouth agape as she looked at the page. Amity grabbed it quickly and flung her eyes across the page.
In excruciatingly accurate detail, the events of that morning had been recounted. From her meeting her neighbor to the disappearing signs that led her to the forest to... the future.
The last sentences read how, when the girls had just discovered the contents of the book, Amity's mother would come upon the scene and demand her to come home and stay there. Amity looked around in horror, spotting a familiar green dress in the distance.
Without saying anything, she grabbed the key and the book and drug Luz to the brush nearby where they would hide. Amity stopped breathing, even Luz seemed serious for a moment, as Amity's mother passed by the well, pulled up her nose, and went on her way. They waited until her little parasol was out of sight to breathe and calm down again.
"H-how did you know she was coming? I didn't even see her until we were already hiding!" She gasped. Amity pulled herself from the clutches of the brush, brushing off the dirt and leafs. "The book told me." Luz looked at her strangely, then took the book out of Amity's hand and flipped to the first page.
"Where?" She asked, pulling up an eyebrow. "Don't be daft, it's right..." Amity pulled the book back to herself, scanning the page only to realize... the hint was gone, replaced by the events that had just taken place. Had she... changed the future?
