•New text message from Emmerson Kingsley•
I feel my new phone buzz in my pocket and as I pull it out I see Em just texted me.
How bout I come over at 3?
I sigh, running a hand through my hair. Ever since I got a new phone, she's been texting me asking to hang out. It's not that I don't want to hang out with her, I just feel like it might be a bit... awkward.
I mean, she's my best friend, and I don't even know her, except for a couple slivers of memories from my dream the other night.
But I mean, we're moving into an apartment together this month. I have to get to know her at some point.
Gosh, my life is so screwed.
I pick up my phone and send a reply.
Sure, let me just check with my mom.
I knew my mom would be okay with it. She thinks I'm lonely and pushing away the only friends I have.
Well, at least if she comes over it'll be a chance to have her explain my dreams.
"Hey Mom??" I yell, coming out of my room, and walking halfway downstairs.
"Yes, sweetie?" She yells back walking to the bottom of the staircase.
"Em wants to know if she can come over today."
"Of course! Tell her she can spend the night too. Oh! And tomorrow, you can go see the fireworks together!"
I roll my eyes. She's way too excited about this. "Kay, thanks Mom."
It still sounds so foreign calling her "Mom". I don't even know the woman.
Sighing, I grab my phone to text Emmerson and see that she's already texted me.
okay:)))
what did your mom say
bri
oh and can i spend the night
we can go see the fireworks tomorrow night
oh crap im spamming you
sorry
I laugh, typing a quick reply. I swear her and my mom are psychic.
Three o'clock rolls around, and I'm slowly getting more and more anxious.
DING DONG
Before I'm even halfway down the hall to the staircase, I hear my mom open up the door and greet Emmy.
"Hello, Mrs. Moss."
"Hi, dear. How are you?"
But before I hear Em reply my mom shouts "BRI! EMMY IS HERE."
"I'm coming!" I yell, then proceed to trip down the staircase and fall flat on my face at the bottom.
"Maybe it wasn't such a smart idea to run." Em laughs, pulling me up.
"Okay, so I brought Starbursts, and Starbucks, and-" she glances inside her purse. "Popcorn." She smiles up at me.
"All right, well, let's go to my room."

That night, I had a dream.
"Come here." I hear someone mumble from beside me, before an arm is wrapped around me, pulling me into their chest.
I'm lying on a picnic blanket with the same boy from the first dream I had. We're lying on the beach, looking up at the fireworks above us.
It's the fourth of July.
"It's so beautiful." I whisper, staring up at the sky. "And I swear, if you say something cliché like 'Not as beautiful as you' or whatever, I will not hesitate to slap you." I look over at him.
He just laughs and points up at the sky. "I like that one."
I smile, snuggling farther into his chest. "Me too."
"So, I have something to tell you." He glances at me nervously.
"Yeah?"
"I... I don't know how to say this." He sighs, shaking his head.
"What?" I sit up, pulling him with me and tilting his chin up so he looks me in the eyes, and I can see how worried he is.
"I kind of... lied to you..."
"About..?"
"Gemma."
"Gemma, your ex-girlfriend, Gemma?" I ask, wondering why he would bringing her up right now.
He nods. "You know how I told you she and I broke up because she moved to California?"
I slowly nod, still not understanding what this has to do with anything.
"It's true that she moved to California, but I didn't tell you why."
He pauses, looking at me.
I lean over and peck him on the lips, encouraging him to continue. "You can tell me anything, you know that."
He nods, sighing. "She moved to California because she was pregnant. With my baby."
I gape at him, immediately letting go of his hand and scooting away.
Why wouldn't he tell me this?
"Please, let me finish." He pleads.
I gulp, and nod.
"Her parents found out and kicked her out, so her aunt in California said she could stay with her, and she wanted nothing to do with me, so we split up."
"So, you mean to tell me, you have a kid?" I practically shout. "And you didn't tell me?"
He shakes his head.
"She didn't talk to me at all after she moved, and nine months later, I got a call from her mom." A single tear slips out of his eye. "She died during childbirth. And so did the baby."
All of a sudden, the scene changes. I'm sitting at a table staring at a menu, and Mr. Mystery is sitting in front of me.
A waitress walks up to take our order, and he decides to order for me, even though I don't even know what I wanted. She picks up our menus and tells us she'll be right back.
"So," he looks down at me, his smile fading. "You leave tomorrow."
"Yeah," I feel myself sigh.
"We have to make the most of tonight." He grabs my hand under the table.
I nod, looking up at him, before saying the three words I never thought I would say.
"I love you."
