It was your first day running alone. Everybody had been fine with it except for Gally. You had argued with him the night before in his room to a point where you had went and slept outside. The next morning he had only given you a quick peck on the cheek before going off to his job with the other Builders. You were hurt that he hadn't even seen you off. He had promised and now he wasn't there.
"This place is huge!" You breathed out and broke into a smile.
With Minho it had just been "keep running, never stop, blah blah blah" but now you could do your own thing. You brushed your hand against the ivy as you ran and every once in a while, threw a piece of it against the floor. You took a second to actually read the signs that were everywhere. World in Catastrophe Killzone Experiment Department. You realized you stood there for a full fifteen minutes just staring at the sign.
"Shit." You muttered and took off. By this time, you'd barely be able to finish your section. Minho was gonna kill you.
Just as you reached the end of section five (fighting for breath) you heard it. Clicks and hisses. The crunching of stone. You stopped running, overcome with fear. You turned slowly and saw it. A Griever. Not a hundred feet from you and slowly closing that distance. It was your first time seeing one and it was horrifyingly interesting. It was a mixture of a slug and a monster. A mouth full of razor sharp teeth and it's "limbs" looked like they could pierce the human skin in a second. You could even see the needle sticking out from one of it's limbs. That's when your eyes widened in shock. How could you have left it come so close?
You took off at a panting race and heard it give a low, guttural scream behind you.
"What would Minho do?" You asked yourself out loud but could think of nothing. You were overwhelmed with pure terror and already exhausted from your mad sprint to the end of your section. The only thing on your mind was getting back to the Glade. Back to Gally. Gally. He would fight it. You felt a trill of triumph when you thought it but then returned to reality. The Griever was right at your heels and you couldn't possibly fight it off on your own.
You were gasping for air and let out a shriek when you felt a ripping and tingly sensation spread through your leg. Your leg gave out and you fell flat on your face. The Griever had taken a good chunk out of your upper thigh at a lunge and now it was pacing behind you, taking it's time. The Griever knew when it had won. You tried to scramble back, using your arms to push yourself.
So close. You thought in a sort of agonizing sadness. Two more turns to different corridors and you would have been back to the Glade. Indeed, you could see that the sky was starting to darken. You wished that you could see him one last time. Wished that you could apologize and kiss him. Gally had been only trying to protect you and he had been right. You closed your eyes as the Griever came to be practically on top of you."I'm sorry." You said loudly and that confused the Griever. It paused for a second and that was all it took.
Big hands went under your arms and legs and lifted you up. As soon as you were back on your feet, you turned and saw him. Gally had come back for you.
He was slicing at the Griever with his knife and every time he hit his mark, a burst of green goo would spurt out and the Griever would scream. Gally turned and he had anger in his eyes.
"Go!" He yelled and you hesitated for a second before limping away, back towards the Glade. You couldn't help Gally with your lame leg and both of you knew it would only make it harder for him to fight.
You had gotten back to that final corridor and were inching closer to it. You saw Newt, Alby, Chuck, and the rest of the Gladers screaming for you to hurry. You tried to pick up your pace when Ben shoved through and raced into the Maze, he gave you a hand up to keep you from falling and together you made it back into the Glade.
"Where's Gally? He ran in and we couldn't stop him. Is he-" Alby started shouting over the other boys and you quickly shook your head.
"He's fine he's fighting the Griever." You had just finished saying when you heard it. You turned sharply (Ben's arm still supporting you) to see Gally.
He was laying on the floor of the Maze, feet from the doors, convulsing and the Griever perched over him.
"NO!" You screamed and tried to go back. You had gotten out of Ben's grip but the moment you were back on your own legs, you collapsed. You tried crawling but then Ben's hands were back.
"GO GET HIM!" You screamed again, your voice already turning sore. The boys exchanged looks filled with despair. They were going to leave him. You looked around in desperation and finally caught Minho's eyes. You scrambled towards him and grabbed the collar of his shirt as your tears started spilling.
"Please." You whispered, your eyes full of sadness and he stared at you for one second before glancing around and giving you a curt nod. This whole exchange only took seconds but it seemed to take hours as the Griever got closer to Gally who was twitching uncontrollably.
"Come on boys. We can't abandon him." Minho said before racing into the Maze. Your mouth opened in shock. Would anybody follow that?
To your surprise, Newt, Alby, Ben, Frank, Winston, Nick, and five other Gladers raced forward a second later, weapons bared. You clasped your hands in anxiety as Minho started dragging Gally closer and closer back to you. Cried out shamelessly as he started screaming in pain. The other boys were fighting the Griever but you just had eyes only for Gally. As he got closer, you started noticing things. He was foaming at the mouth and his eyes rolled around in their sockets aimlessly. The second that Gally was through the walls, Minho yelled for the other boys and they started running as fast as they could to get back. Alby delivered one last stroke that sent the Griever running back into the Maze. But you didn't notice any of that. You had pulled his head onto your lap and your blood was mixing together, but you didn't care.
"Gally, Gally, I'm so sorry Gally." You cried out and your tears fell onto his face. For one brief second, his eyes locked with yours and you saw that they were filled with something you'd never seen in your kind boy's eyes; pure hatred.
"You did this to me." Gally whispered, cruely before he started convulsing again. Your heart broke into a million pieces and it was like you couldn't move. He had changed.
