Dear Dove,

Our friendship developed swiftly
in the last month
of Blake's living on earth.

I balanced my time between tutoring him and checking in on you.
Watching Phoebe from afar to see what you'd said was true.
The dark circles under her eyes and the sudden gauntness of her cheeks.
Even for a cheerleader her weight was frightening.
I wondered how it was possible
to change so much in only four weeks.

You swore you were doing the best you could and I believed it because I knew you would.
After all, we all were doing the best we could with the cards
we'd all been dealt.
But the decks were
stacked against us.

We tried, man, did we try.

You did enough, Dove.
You need to know that.
You always did enough.

None of what happened next
was on you.
