When we arrived back at the stable, Yasitu was grooming Merra, my father's horse. He looked up smiling, but his face dropped when he saw Turak.
Turak reigned Petaine to a halt in front of Yasitu. He jumped down and helped me off of Petaine.
"I assume you will attend to her horse." Turak said to Yasitu rudely. Turak then grabbed my hand and pulled me away towards the house. I looked back. Yasitu was already gone. I tried hard to swallow the lump in my throat.
Turak ended up staying for dinner. Marriage arrangements were made. My mother was very happy and excited. I stayed silent, for i had nothing to say. Every now and then Turak would try get me to talk, saying things like 'what do you think Nemeria?' or 'I agree, don't you darling?'.
All I could think about was Yasitu. Was he angry? I had to find him, but i was stuck here with Turak. I hated this. That i had no choice on whom I marry. Yet woman have no significance compared to men. My Father made that clear to my mother. That he was in charge. My mother was merely just his possession. Yes my Father does love my mother dearly but he doesn't not treat her as his equal. I will not allow myself to become Turak's possession.
"Well I should be going on my way." Turak said.
"Yes you should, it's getting dark and I'm sure you would like to get home to your family." I said smiling at him. A smile so fake, even my father could see it.
Turak left shortly. As soon he was out the door, I rushed to get my coat so I could see Yasitu. My father grabbed my arm before I could make it to the door.
"Where do you think you are going?" He asked hauling me away from the door.
"To Yasitu house." I said yanking on my arm, trying to loosen his grip.
"You will go nowhere near that boy!" my Father shouted. My mother came rushing in to the room to see what was happening. "You are going to marry Turak not that stable boy! If I see you with him again he will loose his job! DO NOT disobey me!" My father bellowed at me. I cried out in pain as he struck my face with the back of his hand.
He left the house in a rage. My mother helped me up off the floor. She helped me to my bedroom. She placed a wet rag on my face. My father had left a red mark on my face. He had hit me. I had never seen him hit my mother, i only saw the marks he left behind.
My mother left with out a word. My father came back later. I could hear the silent talking of him and my mother. This was not going to stop me from seeing Yasitu. My father could beat me to a pulp, and I would still see him. I climbed out of bed. I removed my shoe's so my feet would make no sound on the wooden floor.
I successfully got out of the house without being caught. I made my way pass the village square, where during the day people would sell their farm animals and people would bet on them. I knew exactly where Yasitu ' s house was, i could find it easily even in the dark.
I made my way to the back of the house where i knew Yasitu ' s room was. I snuck inside. He lay on top of his bed. He jumped at the sight of me, but calmed down when he saw my face.
"Nemeria what are you doing here?" he asked in a whisper.
"I came to see you."
"Nemeria-"
"I'm sorry about Turak. I don't want to marry him Yasy. I want to marry you" I cried. Yasy was his nickname that he only allowed me to call him.
He got up and wrapped his arms around me pulling me into his chest. I cried for i was so confused. I was being force to marry one man yet I loved another. I had dilberately disobeyed my father's wishes. I knew I had to marry Turak, for the villages safety, it was marriage or invasion.
He came closer, and inspected my face.
"What happened.?"
"My father." His soft fingers brushed against my cheek.
"Nemeria, i am leaving tomorrow with the other men to go hunting for harvest." he said quietly. I looked up at him, it was to dark to see the blue in his eyes but i knew those eyes so clearly in my head. He leaned in close, so close i thought he would kiss me, but he pulled away.
"Nemeria, I don't want this either, yet I can't stop your father from making you marry Turak. He is the Chief, he could easily throw me out. Your father has been nothing but kind to me, I have to respect his decision and so should you! "
His words cut like a knife into my chest. I confessed my love for him and he rejected me like i mean nothing to him. I tried to contain my emotions but it all came out. I ran from the only man I ever loved. I ran from his home towards mine, back across the village square. I had to control my breathing and crying when slipping back into my house. I reached my room and fell to the floor weeping, as my heart broke into tiny pieces.
