My wedding was the topic of discussion amongst the grape vine. My friends and i were picking grapes for Harvest Festival. It was planned that villagers of Kotra would join us in celebration of Turak's and I marriage. It was planned we would marry tomorrow.
"You are so lucky to have Turak!" my friend Jessabel squealed resembling the sound of a piglet.
"He's so handsome." one said.
"He so kind." another said.
"I wish I was marrying him." Jessabel said.
"SHUT YOUR MOUTHS!" I screamed. I couldn't stand it any longer. All the girls stopped what they were doing to look at me. The youngest girl had even dropped her basket of grapes.
Embarrassed at my sudden out break, I ran down the path way in between the grape vines. I was running so fast I didn't see the person in front of me. I collided with the person falling hard to the ground. I pulled my self of the person to find Turak laying underneath me. A pained look crossed over his face.
"I'm so sorry, I did not see you! Are you alright?" I asked in panic.
"Yes I'm alright, why were you running so fast?"
"I uh.. saw a snake." I lied.
"Oh... Well I was actually coming over to see you." He got up and held out a hand to help me get up. He pulled me up back onto my feet.
"Well you saw me now, you can leave." I said.
"Nemeria, you think you are the only one with feelings here. You don't love me, likewise I don't love you, i love a different woman, but I am marrying you so our villages will unite. Even if you don't want this to work we have to make it work even if we pretend." He said.
This confused me. So he didn't love me? He only wanted to do this for the village. For some reason this hurt me. I did not know why but it did.
Turak offered me his hand and I took it. We walked across the village square, catching the eyes of everyone, pretending actually wasn't that hard. It however became more difficult when I saw Yasitu standing with the group of men getting ready to leave for the harvest hunt. He looked at me, I couldn't help but glance his way. I couldn't see if he was angry or hurt, his face was so emotionless, so blank. I broke eye contact first, staring at the ground. Turak noticed my discomfort.
"Nemeria are you alright?"
"Yes I'm fine, would you please take me home, I'm awfully tired. "
"Of course." He lead me in between the crowd, guiding me towards my house. If he was not hold me up and pulling me onwards, i would have no control of my movements, i felt so numb everywhere. Like I was paralysed. The eyes of Yasitu permanently etched in my memory made shivers run up my spine.
