Chapter 4

I narrowed my eyes with suspicion.

Kyra definitely had something to do with the two fictional men standing beside us.

I shared a long, lingering look with my roommate. Kyra and I rarely saw eye to eye on anything, but, in this moment, without uttering a single word to each other, we communicated on a seemingly telepathic level: Bitch knew that I knew there was something very, very extraordinary and not okay about Jaxon and Lord Maxwell's presence in our goddamn living room.

"You can't believe it worked? What do you mean by that?" I demanded from my roommate.

Embarrassment flashed across Kyra's cat-like green eyes. She averted her gaze.

"What have you done, Kyra?"

"Annalise, I can explain..."

"Please do!"

She hesitated. "You know how I told you that I was trying to cleanse my chakras last night?"

"Uh-huh."

"Well, I wasn't really cleansing my chakras."

I laughed uneasily. "What were you doing, then?"

Kyra paused again. She looked visibly uncomfortable. "I..."

"Well?" I prompted.

The next string of words flew out of her mouth in a rapid fire squeak, "I was trying out a love spell because I needed a date for my ex's wedding next month!"

"What?"

Her eyes grew round and earnest. "I honestly didn't believe it would work."

"What!"

Kyra explained haltingly, "The spell was supposed to help me manifest... the love of my life. But it required a point of inspiration, a strong male energy, to enact the magic..."

"Oh, my God..."

"So... I printed out a couple pages from your stories and burned them as a sacrifice."

My mouth parted in genuine, horrified astonishment.

Who would have known?

Magic was real. Witchcraft was real.

Shock and awe raced through my mind as another startling realization hit me: Kyra followed my stories on Hottpad!

Oh, God.

Did she read that super smutty scene from chapter thirty-six where Jaxon used his tongue to lick Cate's—

Ahhhh! How mortifying!

I had been so caught up in my insane conversation with Kyra that I actually forgot about Jaxon and Lord Maxwell for a hot minute.

My eyes flicked in their direction.

Both of them were staring like slack-jawed birdbrains at my tatted-up, pierced-up roommate. I rolled my eyes. You would think that they had never seen a female before in their lives.

Lord Maxwell suddenly dropped to his knees with a cry of anguish. He crawled towards Kyra on his hands and knees with a look of pure adoration.

"My beautiful, dear, sweet Elizabeth, for the past ten centuries, I have wandered the realms in search of your lost shining soul! It brings tears to my eyes to know that we have now been reunited!"

The vampire lord clung to Kyra's leg and began to weep like a giant manbaby.

With an aggressive growl, Jaxon rushed over to pull Lord Maxwell off of Kyra.

He draped an arm over my roommate's shoulders and murmured, "Hey, babygirl. Why would you want a walking corpse like him when you could have me instead?"

Amusement settled over me as I observed the ridiculous love triangle between Kyra, Lord Maxwell, and Jaxon formulate before my very eyes.

"Be gone, you fiend!" Lord Maxwell growled. "Elizabeth is mine! She has always been mine! And she will forever be mine!"

Jaxon tugged Kyra closer to his chest and taunted, "I don't think so, you toothy fucker. Cate here is in love with me! We've got this thick, sexy, enemies-to-lovers kind of tension going on... There's nothing you can do to come between us!"

If at all possible, Kyra turned ten more shades of pink. My boys were clearly having a very strong effect on her.

She stammered shyly, "I-I..."

In a wry, dry tone, I remarked, "Welp! Looks like your love spell definitely worked, Kyra! These two idiots are clearly head over heels in love with you. I hope you'll be able to pick a date for your ex's wedding before they insult each other to the death..."
