I will destroy you in the beautiful way possible, and only after I leave you'll know why they name storms after people.
- Unknown.
You could say that I'd been living a lie. My life was perfect, too perfect. I'd learned a long time ago that humans weren't flawless yet I basked in the false light of perfection that I wanted everyone to believe. Maybe that was the reason I could see through people so easily. Once you're liar, it's easy to know when everyone else is lying. So far I had managed to keep that part of myself buried deep underneath the earth without anyone seeing the real me.
Until he came along and changed my life completely.
It was an assembly day. At John Prescott Academy there were no daily assemblies. We only had assemblies a handful of times during the year when school heads made important announcements.
Like today for some reason.
"What are their majesties up to now?" One of my best friends Kale said. He scowled along with half of the school body. We were friends since diapers, mainly because our parents were friends. My parents owned one of the biggest advertising companies in the country while his father was managing partner in a prestigious law firm and his mother worked in fashion.
Sometimes I wondered if that was the only reason we were really friends. If we weren't pushed together by our families to form a somewhat eternal bond even when we had nothing in common. That was another illusion I created; to everyone else we were best buds who partied all the time with the world on the palm of our hands.
To Kale it was.
I knew better than that.
"I dunno dude." I replied feigning nonchalance even though I was interested in what the news might be. This was the second assembly for the year and to us it was a pretty damn big deal.
"Someone's being transferred." Elena said tangling her fingers with mine. She was my girlfriend for about 2 years and the only one whose been approved by my parents. I'd like to say that I might have genuinely liked her in the beginning of our relationship. But along the line all feelings I had were dead completely. You'll find out why soon enough.
But for now the appearances were important.
"How did you know?" I asked her.
She shrugged "I have my sources." That was a code for unreliable gossip from other girls. I held in my urge to scoff at that.
"Sorry but a transfer student isn't enough reason to have an assembly." Kale said curtly. I felt Elena's hold on me tightly. There was always tension between the two of them for some reason unknown to me.
"Well it's starting in five minutes so why don't you guys shut up and listen?" Jake said startling all of us at the same time. His long curly hair was tied into its usual ponytail while his ear phones dangled down. His dad was black American and running for senate while his mum was Latino which is where he got his curly hair from but he never talked about her. I had never actually seen her before.
Nevertheless his quiet charm and mixed heritage made him attractive to all the girls who came across him. In fact he was probably one of the hottest and most available guys at JPA to the female population.
But he strangely never had a girlfriend before.
Elena fiddled with her shoulder length hair which had been highlighted blonde this week "Whatever is must be really important. The staff meeting was longer than usual today."
"Dale came out looking pale." Kale recalled to himself. If the overly pompous History teacher could lose colour then the news must have been serious. I leaned back running my hands through my hair "Guess we'll wait then."
But as the last group of students strolled into the assembly hall I noticed a familiar mop of brown hair. I blinked.
I must have been hallucinating.
My heart rate increased as the figure moved closer to the row in front of me. That same mop of soft brunette hair I had pulled several times before. There was no denying it now. Ice blue eyes filled with nothing but cold and despair faced me. It was a mystery how the last time I saw them they held pain and innocence. The very innocence I had shattered.
He was here.
How was that possible? I made sure to bury that part of me forever, burning away all reminders of the past forever. Now it seemed my sins had caught up with me.
My nightmares had resurfaced once again.
His cloudy was expression was filled with a lot of unreadable emotions but there was one I could clearly read. Revenge.
"Harvey, are alright?" Jake asked sounding concerned. My head was spinning at the rate of a million miles.
I felt Elena's small hand on mine "Babe what's wrong?"
Everything.
I could feel his smirk burn deep into my skull. The boy who only knew sweet smiles was bitter because of me.
"Fine just dizzy." I managed to get out tearing my eyes away from the offending figure. She patted my back "Do you need to see the nurse?"
"I'm fine." I snapped back. She stiffened but seemed to have gotten my message and didn't pester me anymore much to my relief. Maybe some other time if I figured this I would apologize for being rude. But at the moment I could care less.
The principal walked to the podium ready to start whatever announcement. Then he turned back meeting my eyes one more time and then winked. Exactly how I did every time I would break him.
I fainted in the middle of the assembly.
Hey guys! Hope you've all enjoyed the first chapter/prologue of my new book. It just came to me a while ago and I'm going to be writing it alongside Dirty Gold so check up for regular updates on both
