Chapter 6

"So," Maki began, "Kokichi's been both ignoring you and being a little asshole again, and you still wanna help him?" She said with furrowed eye brows.

"Maki... I know what you're, thinking, but please- listen to me when I say that I know something's up. Even Rantaro told me, and he's his brother, so that obviously means something," Kaito told her.

Maki didn't say anything before sighing, "Whatever... What did you need to know, anyways?" She questioned.

"I need to know if I said or did anything to make him like this," He replied, "It was the day right after we got together, Maki-roll," He said with a bit of a smile as he remembered how happy he was when- wait, he's getting off track.

Maki blushed, "Well, I don't remember anything you did that could have set him off," She said, going into thought.

"Um... Kaito," Shuichi said.

Kaito turned to the navy haired boy, "Yes, Shuichi?"

"I think I may know what happened, but I don't want to uh... Ruin any friendships or relationships," He said nervously, starting to regret wanting to say anything at all.

"Aw, it can't be that bad, I mean how bad could it-" Kaito was then cut off before he could say anything else.

"I think Kokichi may like you," He quickly covered his mouth after saying that before pulling on his bangs- a habit he's had ever since he took off his hat.

Maki could only stare in disbelief before shaking her head, "Shuichi... You shouldn't go making assumptions like that. What if it was just a coincidence?" She asked, beginning to understand why Shuichi would think that.

"Well... Um..." Shuichi shook his head, "No... You're right. Maybe it was just a coincidence," He nodded.

Kaito walked home by himself that day, just wanting to think.

Shuichi's words repeated in his head continuously.

There was no way Kokichi could have liked him- it was like Maki said! Maybe it was just a coincidence.

Maybe.

...

But was it?

I mean... It was the exact day right after that. There's no way it could have been a coincidence. No- that's wrong. It was just a coincidence.

It's just a coincidence. It's a coincidence. Nothing but a coincidence. Coincidence coincidence coincidence.

The more he repeated it the less he believed it.

Kaito sighed in annoyance before shaking his head. He was just being dumb- there was no way Kokichi had a thing for him. If anything he probably likes Kiibo or maybe even Shuichi... Miu? Gonta? Who knows.

"Dammit," He mumbled to himself under his breath.

He looked down at the ground, continuing to think. Think think think...

That was until he had bumped into someone, "Whoa!" Someone yelped. He quickly reached out to catch them, and he did, but that was when he realized.

Shit.

"Kokichi?" He said simply.

"Huh?" Kokichi looked up from some things he had dropped on the ground. He groaned, "What do you want, idiot?" He said as he regained his balance.

"Nothing- I didn't even notice you until now, sorry for that," Kaito replied, ignoring the mean comment.

"Whatever. It's fine. Not like I care. Anyways! I gotta go do some very important stuff! Bye now!" Kokichi went to pull away but Kaito kept him in place, holding him tighter.

"Don't go yet-" He said before earning another exaggerated groan.

"What do you want from me, stupid head? I'm sick of looking at your dumb face!" He said with knitted brows. He struggled to get away from Kaito.

Kaito furrowed his eyebrows, pouting a bit before pulling Kokichi to him and enveloping him in a hug. Kokichi froze in surprise.

"Please- don't run away again, I just wanna know what's wrong," Kaito said softly while keeping Kokichi in a warm hug, "What happened?" He asked as he gently pulled away from him and tilted Kokichi's head up.

The smaller boy averted his eyes, not wanting to meet Kaito's. He looked to the side as his lip began quivering. Kaito noticed this and frowned, beginning to caress Kokichi's face.

Kokichi of course, saw this as a chance and ran away, not stopping, "WAIT!" Kaito called out after him.

It was too late though. He was gone. He furrowed his eyebrows once again in anger, "God FUCKING DAMMIT!!!" He yelled at himself, stomping the ground. He was so close, so, oh so close. If only he had paid more attention- maybe if he'd been more gentle then maybe Kokichi would have told him what was wrong...

He wasn't going to give up though. Kaito was going to continue trying his best to figure it out- figure out why Kokichi is like this, what he did, and how to stop it. Nothing will stop Kaito Momota, Luminary of the Stars to help his friend-

Kokichi ran and ran until he thought he was far enough from anyone- he looked around himself, finding that he was alone. He shook like a leaf, wanting to cry oh so badly, but he didn't want to! He didn't want to feel vulnerable. He HATED it.

He couldn't help it though.

Stars fell from his eyes as he began crying to himself.

He can't keep on running away! He can't keep in doing this!

He needs to endure this. He needs to show Kaito that he doesn't need him anymore!

Kokichi sniffled and cried harder as he thought this.

Dumb feelings... Making him cry like this! How could they...!

He went silent as he tried calming himself down. The sky was getting dark, and crickets began chirping. He got up, beginning to make his way home as he stopped crying. Something seemed different, though- it was harder to see- he didn't know why, maybe they were just tears... He rubbed his eyes to get rid of any small stary tears before looking around again- it was still kind of blurry, and hard to see, but he brushed it off as him being tired.

He walked his way home silently, no one was out now that it was dark, and hopefully Kaito wasn't either...

He was able to make it back to his house without anyone stopping him luckily. Running towards his house, he got in, dropped his things and headed up stairs to go to bed, not bothering to eat anything.
