The next day, Andy and Miguel were in the Dojo cleaning up some of the mats, scrubbing them clean while joking around together. Johnny then entered, bags of beer in his hands, Andy rolled her eyes at his addiction.

"Looking good! and make sure you get both sides." Miguel made a noise of confirmation. "And after you're done with that you can take care of these exposed wires, that's gonna be a lot of work."

Andy and Miguel made eye contact and they both wanted to explode. Her father was only using Miguel's determination to train to get him to do his work for him, and Andy felt bad for it. She considered telling him to just go home but she knew he would only protest and stay to help her.

"What does any of this have to do with karate, Sensei?" Miguel yelled, still whipping the mats.

"Do not question my methods." Was all he said as he opened a beer. "Just be thankful you're not a sumo wrestler those guys have to wipe their sensei's asses." Andy cringed as her father did a cool trick with the cap of the beer bottle.

As Miguel watched the cap fly, he then noticed the trophies in the corner, still in their box.

"So I see you were a karate champion, Sensei." he turned towards him.

"You don't have to call me sensei every time."

"Sorry sensei-I um-I-sorry-I'm sorry." He stuttered, making Andy laugh a bit.

"I won a couple all valley tournaments, didn't loose a single point my junior year."

"Alright," Miguel nodded, impressed. "What happened your senior year?"

Andy frantically shook her head, telling him not to ask that. He gave her a confused look.

"This isn't 20 questions, get back to scrubbing." Andy gave him a sympathetic look before some weird music started playing. Johnny obviously was confused and started glancing around before Miguel pulled his phone from his pocket and answered the phone.

"Hey! Uh yeah debates running a little late...uh okay! Love you too." Miguel hung up, and out his phone back in his pocket.

"Don't tell me you have a girlfriend," Johnny looked at him. Andy felt a ping of jealousy in her stomach.

"That was my mom actually." Miguel smiled sheepishly. Without anyone noticing, Andy smiled brightly to herself. "I told her I joined the debate team 'cause she doesn't approve of violence."

"Yeah what about your dad? Is he okay with you getting your ass kicked up and down Recede boulevard?" Andy could tell this was a sensitive subject from the look on Miguel's face.

"I never really knew my dad so..." Miguel muttered, avoiding eye contact. Andy smiled sadly, knowing what it was like. There was quite a few seconds of awkward silence between the two.

"We should get back to training..." Andy finally said.

"Yeah, stop standing there, get back to training."

"Yeah sorry okay." Miguel dropped to the ground.

"And change that ringtone, get some guns 'n roses or something."

"What's guns 'n roses?" Both Andy and Johnny looked at him like he was stupid.

"I'm gonna pretend you didn't say that." Johnny then walked away.

"Seriously gonna have to educate you on 80's music." Andy laughed a bit, dipping her sponge again.

"That's 80's music?"

"Alright shut up."

A few days later was the very first day of school. Andy was more than ready, ready to actually see her friends everyday, even if she didn't like the learning part.
