"Uhhh, what's that?" I asked the man.
"Pretty much it's like the choir, but you dance as well. Like in Glee," Violet explains.
"Ohhh... Well, I'm down," I state plainly.
He beams then turns toward the duchess of muddy sticks. "What about you, Ms. Ferguson?"
"Uhm, not if Bird Brain over here is joining," she says, pointing toward me with her thumb. "With all due respect, Mr. Lopez, we can't stand each other. That's the whole purpose of us coming here in the first place. And now, because of you," she looks at me glaring, and I mirror the stern look. "It's on my record that I got detention."
"Well, you can't harmonize alone, and you ladies sound gorgeous together. Hmmm..." Mr. Lopez places a hand on his face and reflects. "What if I told you I could clear your record, but only if you join my show choir?"
I raised my eyebrows and widened my eyes. I never thought a teacher would coerce a student.
"Are you blackmailing me?" she asks, just as shocked as I was.
"Yes, now, are you going to take the deal, or leave it?" he responded.
She stands there pondering the decision for a moment. "... Fine, as long as my dad doesn't know about this or detention."
Mr. Lopez grins. "Great! Just stay here when the bell rings for the second block club classes."
We take our seats and remain silent for the rest of the period.
Why would her dad care about her being in the show choir?
In Show Choir Class
"Alright, guys, we have two recruits. Phoenix and Violet, welcome," Mr. Lopez announces. "Also, I'm giving you guys a new assignment! I put you in groups of two. You must sing a duet about a secret you both wish to get off of your chest. It can be a mashup if you like. But remember, stay in your pairs."
He starts calling the pairs, and I zone out until he calls my name.
"... And lastly, Phoenix and Violet."
Violet and I look at each other in horror.
"This is due next Friday! Get in your groups and discuss," he finishes.
I hesitantly walk over to Violet.
"Do you want my number or something, so we can meet up?" I ask her.
She considers this. "Sure why not? My dad's out of town, so he won't ask why I'm not studying, that is if you want to come to my place," she says genuinely. For once, she's being less of a bitch.
"Okay, I'll have to text my mom. When?" I ask the shorter girl.
"Meet me after school by the buses," she replies with a slight smile.
We exchange numbers.
"Just because we're doing a project doesn't mean I like you though," she says with her arms folded and a slight blush on her face while rolling her eyes.
"I know," I reply smugly.
