Jason Todd was a cold, arrogant and cocky kid. He knew it and so did everyone else. He always played by his rules and he would never think twice about others. It's what got him through life. The motto me, myself and I. His whole life he was alone. But that all changed the minute a short brunette girl with sarcasm and an impatient attitude walsed into his life. The girl, who to this day, had impacted him in ways he could never imagine. Harper Phoenix. An embodiment of all a person should be.
An unlikely bond many would say. One cold and stoic while the other was a radiation of sunshine and love. A sibling bond grew. Over the years it was watered with jokes, memories, smiles and tears. It blossomed into a protective love.
Now standing outside her door, Jason did not care about himself. For the girl he loved more than anyone was hurting, suffering. All because of him. If it was anyone else, Jason wouldn't even bat an eye in their direction. But the girl behind the door he stood facing, wasn't like anyone he had ever met before. She was his sister, blood or not.
Jason hesitantly knocked on the door, his nervousness and guilt eating him away as he built up the courage to approach the woman, who ever since returned had locked herself in her room to battle the demons latching onto her.
When all he recieved was silence he tried his luck with the door. Gently prying it open, in hopes to not startle her, the door opened with a shrill creek before he walked in.
Harper had her back resting on the edge of her bed. Her legs sprawled out in front of her, her hands folded in her lap with the picture he had seen of her family days before clutched in her grip. She was gripping it so tight, Jason could see the creases and folds on the photo from where he stood by the door.
Her hair was ruffled as if she had run her hands through it multiple times, giving it a tousled look. As Jason called softly to her, his steps slow and cautious as he approached her. The girl remained still.
Jason rounded around the bed, he crouched down next to her but his forest green eyes never once strayed from her impassive face. But for Jason, the thing that scared him the most, was her eyes.
Harper Phoenix's eyes were what made her so angelic. Where one would just see normal, boring brown eyes. The ones she loved saw a world hidden behind the eyes that many saw in a regular day. Her eyes had a spark in them, a shimmer that showed her liveliness. Her eyes held stories, ones of her past and the ones she saw in her future. When she laughed they lit up. When she smiled her eyes crinkled and when she cried, her eyes glossed over but they never lost its spark. Harper's eyes held so much power as with one look she could send a man to her feet. She could cheer up any soul and all her emotions were displayed for the world to idolise. But most of all, when Harper looked at you with nothing more than love in her eyes, protectiveness to keep you safe and determination to make sure no one harmed a single hair on your head. It showed just how truly remarkable the brunette woman could be.
But now, her spark was gone. Her eyes were void as she stared numbly at the window that illuminated their faces. Her eyes were dull and no longer filled with vitality.
Jason sat down next to her, his shoulder brushing hers. He felt small. He felt vulnerable. He hoped she would look at him, see the emotions plastered on his face and comfort him. Even if she was the one needing comfort in the first place. Because if one thing Jason Todd wanted more than anything, was the love and affection a parent would give to a child. The sense of belonging. To feel love from others that was not provided by Harper, no matter how selfish that sounded.
Jason was never good with words, he couldn't express what he was feeling to the woman. The regret and anguish that gnawed at him. That held him in an iron fist.
So the only thing he could do was grab her hand. He grabbed her shaky hand and envopled it in his. It was to show he was there. That he wasn't going to leave and hopefully it would show how he was feeling. To show how sorry he was.
Harper didn't even need to open her mouth to feel what the young boy was feeling. She knew how this was affecting him and as she squeezed his hand. He knew silently that even if Harper wouldn't be the same after the events, she forgave him. That it wasn't his fault. Because one thing Harper Phoenix was known for, was no matter the situation she always forgave the ones she cared about.
Jason sent her a sad smile, but Harper never met his gaze. All she did was squeeze his hand tighter and gently placed her head on his shoulder.
They may not be okay, and that is alright. For the events that had caused them to become the person they are now, damaged and aged. Mature and broken. They had each other. No words needed. The comfort in each others presence was enough.
Harper Phoenix and Jason Todd would always be brother and sister. And no power, no force, no test would ever change the way they felt about each other. No matter what, they had each other till the bitter end.
AWWW my babies. I can't 🥺🥺🥺
